I didn't know until recently that R J Mitchell was a son of Stoke-on-Trent. There is a statue of him outside the city's museum:
Inside the museum is this Mark XVI, a low back built at Castle Bromwich in Birmingham (the building now houses the assembly line of Jaguar Cars).
The US-built Packard-Merlin Engine. The aircraft is still undergoing restoration.
A sectioned Hispano 20mm cannon of the type normally fitted to Spitfires.
Another statue of "Mitch" up on the viewing gallery.
From the viewing gallery.
The museum is also displaying a part of the Staffordshire Hoard but I wasn't allowed to photograph it!
