Yikes, well I had long ago decided not to buy any more for myself. But last week for my birthday my dad gave me a case yellow sodbuster Jr for a birthday gift. Sentiment value as a gift aside, sheesh! what a terrible knife! Can anybody confirm this perception? I mean has this company hit an all time low or what? the blade pin, was half out of its hole. How does that get through quality checks? And the edge? can you call it a bur? no way! you could run your thumb along the side of the blade and feel this jagged edge bent over onto the side. I mean come on Case! what are you guys doing in that factory? well, because it was a birthday present I carried to visit my parents home on the weekend and made sure my dad saw me using it. But then I notice the blade getting progressively stiffer to open. Huh? what is this? by the end of the day, Im grunting with the effort to open the thing. man oh man. You have to try really hard to make a knife that bad.

I hear you, but in the past Ive bought them and they had alot of horizontal blade play when opened, and the so called burr on the edge, though this time, just beyond the pale. I stopped buying them because of quality issues, but seeing this knife, I just really have to wonder who they have working for them in that factory in PA. Inspections for quality have got to be out the window. It is kinda of sad because if I ever did get the urge to carry something a little more traditional, Case is just about all there is available retail. Unless you want to buy stuff made in china. Well it looks like this means Im sticking with my trusty SAK for edc.

nothing wrong with a sak{victorinox not that trashy brand and yes i know they're one company now} but my experience with case lately has been pretty much opposite yours. I've been pretty impressed with the fit and finish with the last few knives i've bought. and i buy the cheapies not the high end stuff. I guess a bad one can slip through quality control, to me the real test of the company is how they treat you when you send it back for repair or replacement. I'd just about bet you that they'll make it right, it's certainly worth a try.

When was your bum Sodbuster Jr. made? My experience with Case knives made in the past three years or so has been the polar opposite to yours. In fact, I've been very impressed with the quality of new Case pocketknives.

It's marked 2007, to answer the question about date. Well it is interesting to hear from people who are getting good knives for the last three years. I would rather be wrong than right on this issue. Almost motivates me to get down to the local store and go through the Case case, see if I can find some decent quality.

My opinion: the newer ones have a good grind and come sharp from the factory. Very good fit and finish. My only complaint is that newer production has weak dyeing on the darker color. Red is not a nice dark deep red. The lighter colors such as amber bone are great. The word from Case is that environmental regulations have caused them to change formulas which is causing some issues. I do not have any of the Sod Busters so I don't know how quality runs on them.

Sincerely,
Jay

I have an older (3 years) sod buster and haven't had any complaints about it. Its not the best quality knife I own, but for 18 bucks at the local Lowes, it was a good deal. My only complaint is that there isn't a proper lock on the blade, it snaps open but it snaps closed too...thats a complaint about my choice of Case not the knife company. Send it back to the company.
