Splitting wood with an axe is for girls !!!

The shoes that most women wear don't offer much protection anyway.

With a dull axe they might stop some of the cut but not the crushing effect.

Sharp axe ... most mens shoes wouldn't do much either.

You'd need steel toes like the video says.

Just don't hit your ankles. :)

At least with shoes on your cut off toes don't go rolling across the yard. Yeah, not sure that the whole technique is so useful since they are using poplar in the video. You can see when she knocks a piece over and wants to reset it there's no weight to it. I guess if you heat the house or shop with poplar it must be because that is the best you have. Be prepared to cut and split a trainload of it.

I imagine any wood with a nice clean splitting grain in it would work it is just the way they show it using poplar makes it looks ridiculously easy. Then the kid is barefooted also reinforcing the idea of how easy it is. Drop off a pile of cut elm logs there to split that way and video that it would not look nearly so light and airy.

You made the same comment in the other thread and was told the second video had tougher wood in it. Have you tried the technique yet on your elm?

Jeff, great video, She spilts wood better than most men I have seen.

There is one video I have seen made from one guy that is pretty popular on the out door forums and he is showing his skills at how he can hit the same spot on the small log he is soppose to be chopping in half only about 20 times lol lol.

No, I never tried it. I have split a lot of elm on a hydraulic splitter, I know enough about the grain of elm to know that this technique would be a good way to raise the temperature and pressure of the operator. I get your point. The kid is a whiz bang wood splitter, there's no doubt of that but shoeless working like that gives me the willies, it is so basic to the standard of safety to wear proper gear. It's their life and place, I hope no one gets hurt needlessly and I am sure they are in excellent health and fitness working like that in such nice country.

It's pretty obvious that today was not the first time she'd chopped wood, or been barefoot, as evident by her form in both. It's very likely that she's done both together before as well. From what I could tell, she has all of her toes. By the looks of it it would take something very unusual to make her hit her foot.

When I go afield, I don't do so in protective gear. Sometimes I go full-Lundin and take off my shoes entirely. I still use my axe barefoot. I still have all my toes.

Just because you're afraid of the axe doesn't mean everyone needs a set of these when they start axing about

All I can say for those who are thinking that the level of skill means you can leave the shoes off is that I am glad I am not the Safety Manager wherever it is you work. Those are the kind of workers who complain about gov't safety regulations then they go getting hurt after leaving their PPE's back in the rack. What habits you follow at home and in your off time are about the same ones you bring to work.
What's obvious is that most of you would rather watch Ellie Mae with her axe skills but if it was her cousin Jethro you would be all over him for being dangerous and he would not hold your attention very long....true that?

Whoa, wait. This is a video of her place of employment?! If that's the case, sure there is some concern. Liability in the world we live in is a big deal, and employers would be well advised to follow OSHA guidelines. I didn't realize this was her job. Thanks for the heads up.

Show me a video of a guy splitting barefoot. Better yet, post it in a thread, and see what comments you get. Until then you're just speculating, and poorly at that.

If I manage to video myself doing just that sometime, I'll post it, but don't count on that. I'm far too good looking, and I wouldn't want to make the whole forum jealous ;)

I like the twist technique, for the first few logs I didn't catch that and wondered why anyone would split wood that was on top of a rock. But once I saw the technique, it made sense.

She does look pretty comfortable doing it.
