I guess there's a right tool for the job, and a wrong one. Tried to improvise with what I had. [emoji107] Didn't work out so well. I guess I need to go and get the right tools now. Trying to make grill firewood from about 6 inch diameter mesquite logs. Poor knife.

I would use that rock and just go ahead and baton it on through that mesquite. I am getting hungry. I hope we are having steak? Beef an mesquite goes together like peanut butter and jelly.

Get a harbor freight hatchet or one of the cheap ones on amazon (I usually buy whatever is <$10) and baton it through, or a cheap boys axe, which is great for the small stuff like that, although I admit I've never split mesquite!

I have the same "machete"--mines from harbor freight, pretty useless, except I tied it to the ROPs of my mowing tractor and use it to hack down stuff that's in the way, whacking me in the face, etc. Barely serviceable in that capacity:).

Steaks it was. At least I got the pieces I needed from that mess. Love cooking with mesquite. We call it kiawe here, and it makes for great flavor. So darn tough though. I don't think I could have gotten that rock to do the job. Well worth it in the end

Thanks, no harbor freight either. I do have an old hatchet I can try next time. If not, Amazon it will be. That kiawe wood is a nightmare. Thanks for all the suggestions.

Kiawe (Mesquite) is a tough wood. I would get a good condition, used, American made, 6lb, axe eye maul off ebay. Order a "proper" 36" hickory handle, hang and sharpen it. Use it correctly and you will have it the rest of your life. I woundered if there were any other axe guys in Hawaii!

I had to Google it. Sounds better than our mesquite. We have a pretty good Hawaiian BBQ in town that has a smoke flavor that I could not quite put my finger on...

Thanks, the only problem will be the shipping. Many people don't ship heavier items here from eBay due to that reason. I'll check though. I guess that's the price of paradise[emoji3]

I'm sure that's what they use. Good stuff!

sircharlespiko- Most ebay shippers use the USPS flat rate priority boxes, only way to go shipping to Hawaii. Since you will be looking for the maul head only, it wont cost much because the shipping cost is the same anywhere in the USA, so it makes no diff. As I am sure you know, ask them to package very well. It seems to me that boxes shipped to Hawaii get beat up pretty bad. I buy old tools off ebay and have them shipped to the Big Island without any problems, so I say go for it and get a lifetime tool AND the pleasure of hanging and sharpening the maul. Be careful, it's addictive.

Mahalo Axeman. Great to get knowledge from another member in Hawaii. Any particular brands? Feel free to email me if that's better too. Thanks

Also consider one of the new Fiskars splitting mauls. They are well regarded and might be available at your local hardware store.

Older USA made and stamped-True Temper, Plumb, Craftsman (seems to be a lot of older Crsftsman because of the once prevalence of Sears stores), and any other of the USA brands that you see mentioned on this forum. Dont know about Maui, but lots of garage sales where I live. Old guys like me move to Paradise and can not leave their tools behind-WHY WOULD YOU EVER LEAVE GOOD USA MADE TOOLS BEHIND?
