Spokeshave, drawknife, carving knife?

I've been using cheap rubber mallets, but I picked this up for basically nothing and thought that it would be a really fun restore. Then I found that the replacement rawhide faces are like $50 a pair or more. That seems silly to me.

How difficult would it be to make your own rawhide faces?

No idea. Never done it, no idea how to, not worth my time. Not doing that, not pursuing it.

I can buy a 10lb bag of rawhide for my dog to chew on for $5, but two rolled up pieces of dog chew are somehow worth $50? Maybe to someone who would pay it. Not me.

I use this mallet to fit my axe heads, remove them and drive my wedges. A friend of mine makes them.

I also use a belt sander for probably 80% of the fitting process. For really huge tongues I rip them down with the draw knife. But to stay off track slightly, that mallet is awesome Double Ott! I discovered, mostly by accident, that a mallet about exactly like the one in your picture is the perfect axe hanging mallet. I was using my homemade monster mallet but I found that if I didn't always strike perfectly, it could cause damage (check the wood, overpower the wedge, etc) and the extra weight wasn't as valuable as I thought it might be. In fact, I now use one pretty similar to that in your picture. It has a relatively large surface area, but is actually pretty light weight. For striking the wedge and for striking the swell both, a light weight, but sharp blow seems to be much more effective.

Haha! Sorry JB, I was kinda thinking the same thing.

Haha, yes pretty sure! I'm irritated because it would be a cool and interesting restore and the head is super clean. It would be really nice, but with pricing that crazy I'm slightly aggravated by the fact that it will never happen.
