Goona make a spoon a week for the month of Nov. I figure it is a good way to own the skill...an da week is allotta time even for the most busy of us to crank out a spoon.though it would be a fun challenge...anyone in? post pics of your results here..
here is the kicker though..you can only use the following tools..Axe, knife, crook knife, saw, and coals for burning the bowl.. I got 1 done but haven;t taken a picture.. I will later...
eveyone is welcome to participate there is no prize other than getting better at carving...

I would be all over this one if I had a crook knife. I have been meaning to get one and well, I just haven't got around to it. I might give it a go without one and see how I make out.

Ave and knife is it for me. I am going to try to participate.

Good call man. You're well disciplined at practicing to get better, rather than just hoping skill arrives via osmosis like me, hehe.

I carve a lot of spoons, but most aren't presentable. My new crooked knife has drastically improved their appearance, however.

heres my first pic >> 1 that is nearing completion and that I just started...I still have to either burn out the bowl or figure out how to put a decnet edge on that crook knife it I want to make anything other than paddles.

I used basic sandpaper over mousepad to sharpen mine, plus a ceramic rod on the inner curve. Seems to have worked!

Cool challenge...I need to get some more practice carving....Getting a bit rusty. I have a few skills im wanting to hone this winter, carving being one of them.

I am in! first I have to make a crook knife out of what I have on hand. I will be in the shop tonight with a used sawzall blade. Sawzall blades are hardened, tempered and can be bent into the appropriate shape for a crook knife. I will try to show everyone the process as I move along.

I figure it will be a neat exercise in making due with what you have on hand. To me it is one of the most important survival skills. We will see what the outcome is. Because I have to fabricate the knife first. I might be a spoon behind everyone else.

Will post my progress in this thread.

Paul

Sounds great! Making spoons is an excellent way to really learn how to handle your tool (knife, sak, hatchet, crook knife...). I still need a lot of practice.

I've carved a couple...but they came out looking like deep bowled canoe paddles :o.
Here's one in progress pic and then sanded down (doesn't count...just showing my canoe paddle...)

Will find some wood and work on em in my free time, great idea!

Good Challenge.

My pops made them with nothing but his knife.

Everytime I go and try it I end up longing for my power tools.

Good luck!
