I'm not sure where to put this, but this is probably the most appropriate part of the forum. I just got back from Sports Authority in a futile attempt to purchase a case of ammunition for my 12ga. shotgun, as I have done numerous times in the past. I find that my local store no longer carries any ammunition, firearms or even HUNTING SUPPLIES of any kind!  I inquired about this policy and was told that it is a company wide decision. It is a bad one. I for one, will never shop there again.
Galyans... another chain going down the toilet. They are in the process of being bought out by an east coast chain called Dick's sporting goods (or something similar). It is my understanding that Galyans will be eliminating first pistols, then long guns. They will also eliminate selling ammunition.   I will also cease to shop at Galyan's ever again.
The kicker is, I have tried to find where I can contact either company via the internet to voice my opinions and get some straight answers, and neither site allows that option. It seems that the anti's are winning. I will not spend my money at these establishments when this is how they treat a portion of society that chooses to own and shoot firearms, and hunt. I sure hope that Gander Mountain continues to treat us with respect.
There, I feel marginally better. :grumpy:

Write them a letter and snailmail it to them. That will make more of an impression than email would anyway.

Rehash of what has been posted- Galyans full service firearms dealer bought out by Dick's who currently only sells long guns and ammunition. I bought a 12 gua. coach gun from Dick's shortly after their grand opening here in Indy. Sorry to hear if they plan on eliminating all gun and ammunition sales. Guess that I will be looking for a different chain or local dealer for all of my other sporting purchases

A bit of a clarification... Galyans is eliminating all handguns, will not take trade-ins on long guns, and for the time being (wink wink) will continue to sell long guns and ammunition. It was unclear if they will continue to sell handgun ammo or not. This is what I got today. After I made my initial post/rant, I went to galyans because I needed to stock up on 12 ga. ammo (they had a good sale) and had a nice long talk with the sales guy. He seemed pretty miffed about the handguns, and said if they 86'd the long guns, he was leaving. Time will tell, but I think that is the direction they are heading... especially if the Democraps and the anti's get control of Washington.

I live in Nashville and both Sports Authority stores have closed within a yr after they stopped selling handguns. The compitition Academy sports who still sells handguns are thriving at both location and they are planning on opening another store next yr.

There is a great store here in the Northwest called Sportsmans Warehouse. Great selection of guns and ammo and everything else you might want, with good prices. I saw last week that Sports Authority is building a store directly across the street from them. I thought great, competition will bring the prices even lower. If Sports Authority thinks they can compete in Oregon without carrying guns and ammo, they won't be open for very long.

As a part time employee of Sports Authority in the South East, I can tell you what's happening on this end. The store I work for was a former Oshman's Sporting Goods, a few years ago the chain was bought out by Sports Authority. Sports Authority is part of a chain that includes Gart Sports, SportMart & Oshman's. Oshman's years ago had also bought out the old Abercrombie & Fich stores.

Oshman's has always had their own FFL's. About 20 years ago I was an Asst. Mgr of a local Oshman's and know how they worked their Gun Dept. The FFL and background check remains in the Oshman's name for some reason, even tho the store is a SA.

Scuttlebut is that some of the northern SA store's had a BAD time with ATF...thusly ATF pulled ALL the FFL's from ALL the SA stores. Since our store has the FFL under the old name, ours is the only SA store (at least in FLA) to retain a FFL. Mind you this is just a rumor circulating the company.

I have no problem selling ammo (or guns). My problem is getting the ammo. They send us dribs and drabs of stuff. On the other hand I have about sixty 500 rd cases of 9mm. But not a single round of .45 ACP. Since I've been working there we have received 5 boxes of .45 ACP. Boxes not cases, mind you!!

Just my two cents...who knows I might even get written up for disclosing this much...Oh, well!

Went to the local Sports Authority last weekend in Fairview Heights, IL. They still had guns, ammo, etc... Pistol ammo too. ??? Maybe it's a Chicago thing?

Do you guys have local gun shops? Usually better for your community if you can send your money their way. It will probably cost a little more but you'll be doing your part to keep someone around who'll sell you what you need. Of course sometimes I just can't bring myself to do it. I was in the market for a chive - went to the local gun shop and they wanted 40 bucks. I'm not exactly a regular - but I've bought most of my firearms there so I asked if that was the best price I could get. "Yip." Oh, well. I do what I can without being taken advantage of.

I think it has more to do with a FFL hassle than anything else... Now, don't get me wrong, I won't buy a damn thing from Sports Authority because a 17 year old kid behind the counter called me a liar when I wanted to buy 357 ammo for my lever action, saying that carbines don't use pistol ammo (you need a pistol license to buy ammo for a pistol in NY, but no license to buy a rifle or any ammo that goes into a rifle)
I never do like them big stores anyway... I prefer the little guy...

I have to ask, What store are you talking about because that 17 y.o. sounds like the "expert" at my local SA.
