Hi all. I've seen frequent mention of the military green Frost's Clipper knife available from The Sportsman's Guide. Most everyone states it is a carbon steel blade, and the Guide also states in their catalog that it is a carbon steel blade. However, when examining the picture in their catalog, I can clearly make out 'Stainless Steel' on the blade. Everywhere else I've seen this knife (Ragnar, ebay, etc.) the knife is listed as having a stainless steel blade. What the true deal? Is the knife sold by the Sportsman's Guide really stainless steel, or did they buy a fluke lot of military green handles with carbon blades? Please set me straight on this.

Thank you,

hikeeba

i bought two of the swedish army knives from sportsmans guide, on the blade is stamped frosts carbon steel on the two that i have, although the handles on mine are solid green, no rubber.

I was wondering the same thing.

I just got home (about 10 minutes ago) and saw one was delivered today from SG.

On the blade it says:

Frosts- Mora Sweden
Kolstal-High Carbon

It has the black and green handle.

The "Swedish army knives" that SG is selling is the Mora Clipper pattern, I don't know why they have the OD trim, but mine also are stamped Kolstal-High Carbon. If you look at the page for Ragweed Forge

http://www.ragweedforge.com/SwedishKnifeCatalog.html

(scroll down to modern moras) you'll see that the regular Mora Clipper with red trim is carbon, the one with blue trim is stainless. I'm not sure what Alco got.

10-4, thanks guys. SG must have gotten a deal on a fluke batch, as everywhere else I've seen the military green clipper, it has been fitted with a stainless steel blade. I have been contemplating placing an order with SG for other things, and was toying with the idea of ordering that knife. I would prefer if it came with a carbon steel blade, but I would accept the stainless configuration, too.

And it sounds like alco may have gotten a 700-series tradesman with a military green handle and a carbon steel blade. That sounds like a rare piece! Cool!

ColdWood....hahahaa...I'm ordering the Mora's tonight!
But not before scouring "the Guide" for other cool stuff.

I am to understand the OD green are either an actual military overrun, or, are simply available commercially because the military contracted for some, so, they also offered them publicly in that color config.

I'm snatching some. ;)

Yayyy, finally!! Also, get one of them black Russian "ushanka" faux fur hats and let me know if they're any good :)

The carbon steel ones SG has are a rarity?

Well, I was already thinking I should have purchased more than one....

I don't care that they are rare per se, but I prefer carbon and I really like the colors. Now I need a better sheath.

DONE! (well not your Rusky fur hatski, comrade.) sorry. :o

OK, I got 3 of the Mora rascals. Will give one to my son to start building his in-car survival kit. Also grabbed the Esbit Stove & Fuel.

Back in the saddle. damm the charges! Full speed ahead! :D

While Skunk is busy lighting fires with his plastic, you can find a nice Kydex sheath for the Mora Clipper here:

http://www.mnsi.net/~nbtnoel/products.htm

Scroll down to Frosts and click on the picture.

The sheath these come in from SG are sturdy but not real pretty. If you glue a piece of leather inside the collar, it will hold the knife in place better. The belt clip is kind of lame also, too small, so I hooked a loop of paracord into it for neck suspension.

Coldwood,
Man, I got an ember going with the Mastercard in 30 seconds!

I'm sure they do a wonderful job with sheaths.
However, SkunkWerx Labs has the Kydex thing going along pretty well.
Can't wait to wrap some around a Mora.

Hmmm..wonder who esle got Mora's that might like a sheath?

Lemme go check on something...why yes, we DO have some OD Green Kydex that just arrived here at the "Labs".

Fonly, thanks!
You, the "master of equipment related blade items" isn't jumping in on a Mora?

Coldwood told us We MUST have one, or three.

one other thing, these take a wicked edge with very little work, they are a great camp knife, and everyone should have a couple of these around. not expensive and would make a great first knife for a youngster.

Skunk, I want to see how you wrap yours, but otherwise I'm up for a Kydex. I'd prefer a folded over belt clip instead of loops.

Alco, I agree with everything you said, mine is scary sharp, and they are so light weight you can stick one in your pack for a back-up blade.

I think we've started a Mora cult, like they have for Busse's and Spyderco's  :)

Well, I can't access my Photobucket pictures from here in Iraq, but hopefully this link to Frugal's shows the picture of the kydex sheath I had made for both my kids to house the cheap Mora and a fire steel:

http://www.frugalsquirrels.com/vb/showthread.php?t=169796&highlight=Mora

I picked up a few of the cheap Mora's from SG, excellent blades for the price. The higher carbon steel is easy to sharpen up and if your kids don't take care of their blades, it will quickly show (as my son found out after storing a wet blade:eek: ). Also, if they do lose their "first" fixed blade, it's a cheaper lesson to learn.
