I noticed that sportsmans guide has 100yd spools of military "TYPE" paracord for just $15. Anybody got any experience with it. Now I realize it isnt the real deal but I dont actually use paracord to support 550lbs ever. Is the quality such that this is a good deal? If not where is the best place to score spools. Seems i go threw the stuff pretty quick and want to get more than just the 100' hank.

Try Brigade Quartermasters or Major surplus and survival. BQ definitely sells real 550 cord. Note of caution: Tensil strength and breaking strength are not the same. Breaking strength is roughly 1/18th of tensile strength if I remember my training. (it was several decades ago so forgive me if I am wrong) There is a formula out there that somebody may be familiar with, for calculating breaking strength of braided lines using 550 cord for example.

In a current catalog, SportsmansGuide shows three types: one rated for 550lbs, one rated for 250lbs, and one rated for 150lbs. (cat #'s BX8X-15500, BX8X-1759C, and BX8X-1749C respectively)

Edited To Add: I have a large spool of their 550 that I use all the time and have no reason to doubt that it is what they say it is.

i have used a bunch of sportsmans guide 550 cord, never had it fail. i have a couple of big spools around here and just take off as much as i need.

Just got a 300 ft. roll of seven strand 550 cord from SG. I use theirs all the time. good stuff.

The most common sold is Type III
"550 lb"
"7 strands"

I have been looking for Type I or II in black to make handle wraps with no luck

I think Type I is just Type III without the 7 strands??

I bought a 300ft. spool of #550 cord from Brigade & it cost me $19.95. they only had od. I have seen od & black at local gun shows for $15.00 for a 300ft. spool. there is an Army-Navy store I know of that has 1000 ft. spools for $39.99

I think with SG or CTD that you need to read the descriptions carefully. I had some "550" that had what appeared to be simple a bundle of nylon strands. My current roll is the 7 strand braided that I prefer and believe to be the real deal.

I bought a large roll of the OD paracord. It is not military paracord, it's a cheap knockoff,I use on non-critical stuff.

I buy from County Comm too, but here's a thought:

If we're parachuting (!) or otherwise using the cord for weight-intensive activity, 7-strand 550 is the only way to go. Of course, even then, it isn't climbing rope. But for most of what I use paracord for, I would think whatever S.G.'s selling ought to be fine, especially at that price. I think I'll get some (but still have plenty of 550/7 along...just in case).

The real deal 550 paracord is only $7 per 100 yards at my local army surplus store. I don't think I would get paracord from sportsmans guide. Check your local surplus store or visit the link coldwood provided.

I have been getting my 550 from County Comm. I just thought that at SG price it couldnt hurt.
