These blocks were cut from a piece of sycamore that had been grown over by blackberry bushes a few years back. When I found it the other day it was all gray and ugly looking. I could still tell it was sycamore and remembered some that we had purchased from a veneer mill that closed. Figured I would cut it up and see what was inside.
Sycamore is really drab looking wood unless it is quartersawn. So that is how I cut these. That is how you get the wild looking flecks that look like snakeskin. Plus this piece had birdseyes that added to the unusual look. The wood felt good and dry when I was cutting and sanding, but since it has been outdoors you should let it sit a couple weeks in case of any residual outdoors moisture. There will be a few small open eyes in some of the blocks about the size of a pencil lead that you might need to fill. All in all, these are all very nice pieces.
