Spriggan +

Things are going downhill fast…. I guess there is knife content. 🥸
Stein's:Gate has some absolutely plot-crucial knife scenes, despite being a show that isn't really about hardcore action sequences.

Berserk has a ton of great knives and swords, I particularly like Griffith's Swiss saber and Casca's excellently proportioned longsword.

No toons since 10??!?

That sounds like child abuse. ;)

You might be missing some stuff you’d really like by excluding an entire medium.

I’m 50 and probably watch more animation than live action…

Sorry for the non-knife question, but...

I'm (*literally) less than a week older than jfk1110...same month, same year, different day. Even as a 51yo man, I still enjoy watching some of the old cartoons from my childhood...Bugs Bunny/Roadrunner, The Jetsons, Scooby Doo, The Flintstones, The Pink Panther, Tom & Jerry, etc. I really can't find 'em on TV, but will sometimes watch if I see one on. (*I guess just out of nostalgia)

My question is this...How does "Anime" compare to our generation's "Heavy Metal" (*and the like) animated films? I haven't seen one in awhile, but seem to remember them being pretty graphically violent...almost kinda' one-up in nature, as if Tarantino was making cartoons.

You guys had me all excited, I thought spyderco was bringing back the Sprig or making a new version called Spriggan...

I loved Heckel & Jeckel........ Woody woodpecker....... Mighty mouse......Johnny Quest......oh and Land of the lost....Nothing compares to those good old toons

The Cobra film is a diamond in the rough. Still one of my faves even among other more well known action flicks from the 80s/90s.

“You’re a disease. I’m the cure.”

“Call the Cobra”

I love that movie. I don’t think they are allowed to make movies like Cobra anymore.

Explosions, Guns, cars, motorcycles, a cult and Bridget Nielsen. What more could you ask for.

Explosions, guns, cars, motorcycles, a cult and Salma Hayek - Tarantino's From Dusk Til Dawn. Yowza - and no Cobra but a Python - in all the right places.

Depends entirely on the specific show, but overall I think you’re probably right. Anime tends to be more adult themed and “realistic” compared to other types of animation/cartoons. The movie “Akira” is one of the best in this genre and what got me hooked.

For perhaps the best “family friendly” Anime, check out some of the films from Hayao Miazaki/Studio Ghibli. “Spirited Away” is awesome.

Berserk is pretty damn brutal, but i enjoyed all three movies. Guts' sword would make even Cold Steel say, "whoa there guys. THAT is a ridiculous."

Spriggan is solid so far. I do enjoy the crazy indestructible knife. I need to finish it, but as a sucker for Norse things, the Vinland Saga has me hooked, but im going to finish it.

For me, Mick Dundee's bowie was the coolest knife around.

Bridget Nielsen hahaha. Maybe a 90s Jennifer Connelly or a 00s Liv Tyler lol.

Hey friend. 20s Asian dude over here. To oversimplify things, “anime” is a massive genre that really includes lots of things. And as with every other medium of fiction, it has rubbish and it has treasures. Shonen category typically cater to teenagers while seinen category cater to adults. Even then, those two categories aren’t always cut and dried. There are some really good shonen shows out there that tackle nuanced mature themes, if you can get past the over the top visuals or unconventional humor perhaps.

There are plenty of “short animes” out there (12-24 episodes) that deliver great storytelling, all while avoiding heavily political talking points that put me off some Western shows. Steins;Gate, Cowboy Bebop, and Psycho Pass season 1 are just three examples. Black Lagoon is also great but since the source material is still unfinished, the show doesn’t have a satisfying ending yet. There are also violent and psychological anime, like Evangelion (I didn’t enjoy this too much).

It’s definitely not everyone’s cup of tea, but I would suggest trying one show out before dismissing it outright. The best quality anime also bring excellent soundtracks, voice acting, and brilliant art styles.

And I’m still waiting for a knife-centric action anime. Somebody write that already, haha.

I’m disappointed Mr. Thompson and Mr. Demko didn’t make Guts’ sword, haha.

I’m about to start episode 6 of “Vinland Saga” (Netflix).

It takes place during Viking times/places and is another “knife centric” anime.

Protagonist learns no-spin knife throwing to hunt rabbits as a child while starving in the woods.

So far, obviously, it’s holding up. ;)

Nice. Heard good things about it. May give this one a shot.

I used to really be into anime, from 1999 to about 2012. The only thing I ever bought was at a convention in 2008 I believe, a cheap katana replica of Byakuya Kuchiki's zanpakuto "senbonzakura" from Bleach.

Cowboy Bebop and Trigun are my favorites. I have the Manga of Trigun.

Also was as mentioned a Bleach fan, as well as GITS, Inuyasha, Yuyu Hakusho, Outlaw Star, and Death Note.

I'm 43, so I grew on 80s and 90s stuff at one point I owned the United Cutlery Phoenix knife, a klingon knife lookalike.

I was and am both a nerd and a jock. Love my sports as well.

My cousin has a plex server (he is much younger than I) that he shared with me. He is just now getting into anime.l, and has uploaded a bunch on the server. I just started watching Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, which is Apparently more true to the Manga than the original. Thus far, I'm enjoying it.
