Hi everyone - greetings from NW Missouri...

I know this is super early, but my wife and I are already considering a spring/early summer 40th wedding anniversary vacation. We have not set a time for that yet but since I REALLY want to make it to the spring gathering, can anyone give me a hint as to whether there will be one and also even approximately when?

I would hate to firm up vacation plans and create a situation where I could not come to the gathering.

Thanks much to anyone who has an idea.

Steve

A bit off the main topic, but congrats on the upcoming anniversary! 40 years is a long time. Well done.

Colonel, it's always Ethan's final call, and he just left for SHOT. I have not heard anything mentioned about dates thought.

Hey Colonel....

First of all, congratulations ...... I will be back in ten days or so and will get to it for sure then ....... Mayhaps sooner...

Wow....Forty years.....

Ethan

Colonel - congrats!
now the simple solution is to plan your anniversary vacation at Pigeon Forge, Tn -- that way if the dates you pick are remotely close to the gathering dates, you'll already be in the neighborhood, and if not - then you'll have 2 chances to stop at SMKW and the Lodge outlet this spring.

Congratulations on 40 years mate, a wonderful achievement. I've been with my wife for 24 years and couldnt imagine life without her. Us Aussies need to have a get together as well.

Gassy - that's the spirit!
There was a Norway gathering this fall, why not an Aus gathering this spring?

Thanks Vic! But we may be Ohio bound.. BTW I have been looking unsuccessfully for an old anvil - maybe 100 lbs +/- and cheap. Not finding one on Craigs List, flea markets, junk stores etc. Any ideas on how I should go about finding one? i occasionally want to beat on some steel! ;)

you've covered just about every base but farm auctions - or we could make you one.

Make an anvil? You are just too talented. I'll keep looking - every once in a while I have a bent piece of steel I need to straighten or a straight one I want to bend and I do have a piece of RR track about 2 feet long.

As far as old anvils go, it's just a matter of keeping your eyes peeled and getting lucky. They're getting rarer every year, and people who understand what they're good for tend to want an arm and a leg for ones in good condition.

Some guys use RR rail or make them out of 4"x4" chunks of steel standing up in a bucket of concrete or something, with a hardened face welded onto them (post anvil) and other interesting DIY-type deals. I suspect an actual blacksmithing forum would have lots of ideas for making your own.

Might want to go ahead and get some dinner reservations for Blade too. :p

yup - weld a large pipe to a tire rim, fill rim with concrete for mass, and add a piece of 4x4 or 2x6 plate to the top for a striking surface.
hard plates are nice, but not totally necessary for what he's talking about, drill a round hardy hole, add a short piece of round stock welded to one end of the plate for the horn, and you're good to go.
I even know a good place in Wichita to buy the steel and have some spare rims out in the pasture for the base.

A buddy of mine uses an old engine block, with a piece welded to the top for a flat, and a stump for base.

Or I could sell you an actual anvil for a million bucks. They're going for twice that in Brooklyn, so its a good deal.
