Spring Sag

Seems like the best solution is to not mess around with the knife and send it back to GEC so they can loosen it up.

has any one actually used a slipjoint until the spring sagged? currently the only slip joint with a overly stiff spring is my little coleman keychain knife that i got as a kid, and thats still stiff. its been over 15 year tho...

No, I have not.

yeah, supposing its good carbon steel, dont they temper or harden with use? which i suppose might stiffen it more. this probably differs from switchblade springs, a subject thats been discussed ad nauseum over in the switchblades section

My comments in post #9 above would still apply.
If the spring is properly tempered and stressed, the response will be on junction of the linear red line and the dotted line. It will be completely elastic and will not soften. If the spring is not tempered properly, or the knife is designed such that opening the knife deforms the spring too much, the spring will be outside that linear response and it can be permanently deformed.

What Knarfeng said.
If a spring operates under it's yeld point, that is the range where it'll keep its shape indefinitely.
A properly heat treated and designed slipjoint spring could be flexed at least x2 the normal operating arc (including the preload) without falling outside its proportional range.

My comments in post #9 above would still apply.

yeah, totally debunks the whole spring can break in thing, or you can influence the spring by opening it. a discussion they always bring up every few months, but i think its been made a highlighted post so that people can stop arguing it in switchblades section
