Hello, I sent an email to a spring manufacturer in Calgary, Alberta (Standen Spring) just the other day. I was wanting to know what steel they used and if I could buy some. Here is the message I recieved...

"Randy – The steel we stock is 5160, and it is available in raw form. The sizes on it are kind of strange as spring steel doesn’t follow traditional steel thicknesses. It is available in .262, .291. .323, .360, .401 thick, in widths from 1 ¾” wide to 4” wide. Most of the sizes are in stock. We sometimes have some .237 x 1 ¾” as well. Let me know what lengths you need and I can
get pricing and availability for you. It typically runs at $2.50 a pound in raw form."

Just wanted to put this out there in case anyone might be looking for more larger quantity steel and different sizes of stock. This is just an alternate source...of course I would suggest going to KnifeMaker.ca first though.:D

.401"

That's almost thick enough for me to grind a knife out of!

Doesn't $2.50 a lb sound a little high?

NO! 2.50/lb sounds rock bottom if you've just spent $38.00/lb on CPM M4:eek::eek::eek: Seems like a really small price to pay for new known steel if 5160 is what you're looking for...

A typical order from the states of known H/C steel 1095/1084, cruforgeV etc. ends up being $6.00 - $8.00 / pound when shipping, brokerage and any other bend over fees UPS can make up are added to the bill.

lol "bend-over" fees!!!

I buy A2 and D2 offcuts for less than 2.50 a lb but they are weird shapes, have to rip with a bandsaw (used a hacksaw back in the day...whew), so I kind of expect 5160 to be cheaper. Maybe they have offcuts?

I pay the big bucks for powder steel too, but when I look under my trucks and see springs I don't see 2.50/lb... in fact at the local farm supply I can buy springs, shaped and heat treated for less than 2.50/lb! That's not to say I could find a better price on 5160... it just sounded like a lot.

but this is strait annealed no hole known stock.... The price has gone up though last year I bought 200lbs for 1.50 a lb from the same people, though he didn't give you an exact quote either. I bought the .262x1-3/4, just right for big choppers in my opinion. They probably have a scrap bin that you could go through. The best thing is that it's local and you don't have to pay/wait for shipping.
