I need some advice . I am having difficulty getting a decent spring temper for my assist kicker backspring. They're all breaking, though previous pieces haven't. I'm using ATS 34 in a split clothespin type arrangement, with the spring covered by the backbone portion. Anybody else doing this? What tempering temp and procedure will give me a medium-hard, non-brittle spring?

You'd have to get up to 1050-1100 F. What are the dimensions , can you give us a photo ?

2 hour soak at 1190-1200 on split spirings , rockers and back springs for slip joints 3/16 and 1/8 never had a problem.

I've done one of these previously, and everything turned out fine after a hundred cycles on the bench. I cooked that one @ 1975, then double-draw @ 1000, no sub-zero. The sprung portion of the piece is 68mm long, 3mm X 2mm width & depth. Maybe I'm on the ragged edge @ 1000. Sorry, no pic of the piece; it's installed. Tonight I made a backbone with a slot, and fabricated a 1095 spring to fit. 'Til I figure the split one's problem out, I'm going with that. Deep-blue temper on that one passed testing easily. Thanks for 'mailing. TerryLee Renner*

I HT my springs 1975/1125 (temper twice) for appx. RC 47. I would think tempering @1000 would result in springs that would be way too hard.
Thermocouples and furnaces do vary and hardness drops off really fast after you get above 1075, so you really need to run some test pieces to see what works for you.
