Spyder Advice for a Benchmade guy

That's a really good point. I think I may need to visit a local retailer and hold some Spydies in my hand. Now I'm getting really excited to start exploring the world of Spydies.

That is likely the best way to avoid dissatisfaction. :)

I've avoided comment up to this point because the only Benchmade I have is a 710, but none of the Spydies I have really compares. I'm also not familiar with the 510. However, since seeing the posts I thought I'd add my two cents. I would like to also add high marks for the mini-manix and Caly 3. Both excellent knives for the money. The Mini-Manix is a bit heavier duty and the Caly is more thin with a more low profile clip on it. Both have a flat grind and are as sharp as you'll find anywhere right out of the box. I'll also cast a vote for the Native. The ergos on that thing are unbelievable. The more I use that thing the more I like it, and its light as a feather thanks to the no liner FRN handle. You're hard pressed to go wrong with these or any of the other Spydies mentioned.

I think the Spydies that come closest to feeling and acting like my 530 are the Centofante 3, and the Jess Horn.

But I'm in the "you should just go look at some Spydies" camp. You picked out your 710 and 530 because you liked the way they looked, they were in a size that met your needs, etc, right? And thye make you happy. Just keep going with your instincts - look for some Spydies whose looks you like, that have a size or feature that you want in a knife. When you've figured out the two or three (or ten or twenty :)) that make that list, handle those and see which one likes your hand best.

The 710 is considered the top of the line of Benchmades at least in customer satisfaction and rep here. I would try to find the equivilant spyderco rather than one that looks the same as the 710. The CF military was mentioned and the Police ,Endura and Delicias are
also contenders.

If you have two favorite knives from Brand X, why you go to Brand Y and try to find a similar tool?

I would scan the online catalog pdf over on spyderco.com and pick one that caught my fancy.

But then again maybe you would only be attracted to the Military and the Delica, they are great knives.

I guess I'm just saying don't be afraid to expand your horizons.

OK I took this advice to heart and just picked up a Vagabond from a member here on the forums. Can't wait to give it some work. Who said Spyderco isn't innovative?

Now that is a direction I would never have guessed you would go based on your first post to the thread. :)

I'm like you. A Benchmade guy who likes some Spyderco's.

I'm surprised tho, that no one has compared a Grip and a Stretch. I'm so waiting on a ZDP/CF Stretch. And I'd love a Grip w/ ZDP/aluminium, or a Presidio in ZDP.

But for Spydies, check out also the Persian, just cause they're nice. And I agree w/ the others who say the Native is a great knife in S30V.

I was also a Benchmade guy who wanted to know what all the Spyderco stuff was about. I first bought a Native, then a Manix, then a Native III, then a Cricket... and there's a whole bunch more I still need to get!

Have fun choosing. I bet you end up buying more than one. Way more. :-)

Stay sharp,
desmobob

If Your Looking At The Military, you Have To Look At The Manix,i Have One And It Is So Beefy For A Folder, has A Great Flat Grind.you Could Pry Open A Car Door With This Knife.as Far As The 530,the Delica Is The Right Knife....can You Tell Im A Spydy Fan?

The Endura Gen. 4! I'm not sure if it's technically the "flagship" model but it is undeniably the one of the designs that greatly contributed to what Spyderco is today. Heck, it's an "eduring" model after all these years (and upgraded at that) is a testament to the design's functionality.

Simple and cleanly executed design, time-proven locking mechanism and an excellent edge-holding steel with a blade that's made tip stronger. I gave my Gen. 3 to my dad and saving-up for for a Waved Gen. 4 now!
