Spyder drop?

It is what we call the opening method where you grip the blade by the Spyderhole and flick the handle down to open the knife. I first saw the method used back in the seventies on a Buck 110, where the guy grabbed the blade in a pinch grip and swung the handle down. Early Spyderco models were all tip down, so the natural draw and open method was to slide your thumb into your pocket on the inside of the knife, pinch the hole between thumb and index finger, pull the knife up and out of the pocket, then flick your wrist down and back up to open the knife. Once you get used to it, it is very fast.

Yea and unfortunately that is the method used in NYC to describe it as a gravity knife. I can open it just as fast or faster as well as much more safer with my thumb than with those kind of acrobatics.

If that is the definition of a gravity knife, then NYC could say ANY knife is a gravity knife. The spyder drop isn't my preferred method of opening. supasuprab0b asked, and I showed him.

thanks for the vid frog.

i agree, i can open most of my other knives using this method as well, i just tried.

The Customs guys here have started to use that interpretation to classify most folders as gravity knives too :(

The police don't though.... so they're 'illegal' (the law itself hasn't changed in over 20 years) to import, but not to buy locally and carry.

Hopefully someone with a bit of cash (a major importer/distributor/retailer) is going to take the matter to court and get it sorted (or our letters to MPs, petitions and such will sort it out )... but until then most of us UK guys are staying clear of importing folders for the time being.

It's also a very good way of getting a knife through the foot. Maybe not so likely with a Spyderco since they're so light, but a knife like the Buck 110 is too handle heavy for this kind of opening to be safe.

Actually, on the Buck 110 and similar heavy handled knives, the wrist flick is pretty much unnecessary. If you grip the blade firmly with the handle parallel to the ground and rotate your hand at the wrist quickly, you can open the blade just like you were using two hands.
