Spyderco’s Compression Lock by Other Knifemakers

Would the trademark prevent any of these companies at least giving credit?

I’ve paid attention to the Benchmade Axis Lock and other manufacturers don’t mention Benchmade or Axis in their official marketing perhaps due to legal issues. The generic name is Crossbar Lock but Kershaw calls it DuraLock, Hogue calls it Able Lock, Kizer calls it Clutch Lock, etc.

I like the button+compression lock concept a lot. It solves the lack of strength and reliability of a regular button lock and the not great ergonomics of the compression lock. Hopefully it will catch on.

I've requested Spyderco do more button comp locks, but it fell on deaf ears. Now you-know-who has beaten them to the punch with a better nicer version. Snooze, you lose as they say.
There is a way to make it without a blade cut out as well, but if they haven't figured it out by now, they never will.

Some people innovate, others copy, sometimes the copies are better sometimes they are not.

As they say, good artists copy, great artists steal. I've always interpreted that to be about the difference between imitation and incorporating something in to one's own way of making things.
Everyone copies - the form has been explored for literally thousands of years. The greats just make it look like they invented it.

The Demko shark lock is a great lock. I like the spring that should last much longer than an omega spring for the benchmade fans.

Back when the Spyderco Sage series was all about showcasing different lock mechanisms, Spyderco would pay tribute to the designers of different locks. Unfortunately, now the Sage series only has the Compression Lock.

AFAIK, the LW Sage has become a sort of folding mule for new steels. That may spell the end to the Sage series.

What's a good generic term for the "Compression Lock"? Vosteed chose "Top Liner Lock". I'm guessing it's more like a "Reverse Liner Lock".

Cold Steel had an innovative liner type lock a long time ago: very simple, sturdy and reliable, like Spyderco's nifty Compression Lock. Interesting to see new ideas and variations emerge.

I like the compression lock without a button. I suppose if I wanted to fidgety-flip it open & close the button would help.

I think calling it a variant of the liner lock is highly misleading since it's much stronger due to the use of the stop pin. It only superficially resembles a liner lock. I would call it a "Tab Lock" or "Wedge Lock."

I much prefer the compression lock over a liner lock. If it was simply a "back liner lock" I wouldn't use it. I also really enjoy the axis lock and spydercod seki city lockbacks. Really anything I can quickly and easily use with one hand and I trust won't fail on me.

Wow didn't know they had a sage with an axis lock now. That would be a hard choice between that and the compression lock version
