It sure has. The original model has full carbon fiber handles an lanyard hole while the new version is a carbon fiber/G10 laminate with no lanyard hole.

Thanks. Actually the original also uses a carbon fiber/g10 laminate. If the price dropped $50 on a lanyard hole that is pretty amazing and I hope a sign of things to come!

You're right. They both have the same handles. Not sure why there's such a price difference but I'll find out and let you know.

Sorry for the slow response... just heard back from Spyderco. I didn't get a specific answer to why it's $50 less but she did mention the improvements.

Here are some of the improvements per Spyderco:

"It has been transformed to a slimmer and sleeker version. It will be lighter than the original, and the ergonomics have been tweaked a little as well, making it a more comfortable carry. These include small changes like the larger forefinger choil, and reshaped end of the handle."

No, the Brend/Pirela Mamba will not feature the Confederate flag on the blade. Branding is negotiated before contracts are signed, so this was decided long before the recent events being shown in the media.
