Spyderco 2021 Lists: Delivered & Upcoming

Don't know if this is the right place for this, but Spyderco announced the release date for the Mule Team 29P Z-Max.

6/8/21 at 9am MDT

I don't want one but there's got to be a better way to do this -- other than just publicizing the "release" date/time to set up a mad rush (using auto phone dialers) to get thru to order one (or more).

I don't even know if there is a quantity limit on orders for new releases. Is there? If not, there should be a ONE KNIFE MAX to each buyer so that people who get in 1st can't grab as many as they can afford in order to flip them and so that the few who actually want to own/keep the knife can get one.

A pre-order system could also possibly help in the mad rush to buy popular new releases and make it administratively more efficient for Spyderco to manage the orders.

I also think that substantially INCREASING the release price for the Mules would significantly reduce initial demand (particularly from flippers) without substantially reducing the sale of them in the long run.

$50 for a Mule is ridiculously low considering the demand for them. I'm thinking at least $100-150 for the blanks (which is what most Mules sell for in the 2ndary market) would achieve this.

Of course, this will drive the asking price for the Mules acquired for flipping even higher but it will also substantially reduce demand for them at those prices and the "market" will determine what people are willing to pay.

For example, all those flippers who bought the KJ Bowies for $400 are now finding few buyers over $600 and I've noticed sale prices dropping back to $500. There's still room for a decent profit on those knives but the margins on a $100-125 Mule would not be as inviting, especially if they cannot buy/sell them in quantity.

Just my 2 cents from the sidelines.

Sorry I didn't see your prior suggestion but which idea are you referring to? I mentioned several.

1) A One Knife Limit
2) A Pre-Order System
3) Increasing Pricing
One knife limit per household stated on Spyderco forum.
Agree that a pre-order would be nice. Hard to enforce the 1 per household system if someone, say, ships one to their house and another to their workplace, and another to their mom's house, etc...
Also agree that the low price drives some of that, too, but I do appreciate that Spyderco puts these out as an affordable option

I, for one, already have micarta and Corby's on the way in hopes that I'll pick one of these up. If it doesn't work out then I'll hold onto the materials until the next one comes around.

Spyderco has said that they are increasing the size of future runs but this one was already finalized. Not sure when the larger runs will begin.
Also Spyderco has said repeatedly that they don't price knives based on what the market will bear.

I'm sorry I mentioned a pre order system a while back

So, you're saying that this has all been discussed before but still nothing's being done.

Sounds like how government "works" but I would think that any company as small as Spyderco (and Spyderco is defintely a small company by Dow Jones standards) would/could be more nimble.

There's obviously a "problem" and something "should" be done about it.

End of rant. LOL! ;)

This is not a Spyderco directed post, but a general observation. Logistics issues, escalating prices of raw materials and increased shipping costs are playing havoc now on manufacturers. The challenge for them is getting product out before the customer goes elsewhere. The past 12 months have created an insane demand level on consumer discretionary products due to the massive Covid stimulus checks, supplemental state and federal unemployment benefits and moratoriums on eviction and auto repo (this is not political). This will be ending soon (no political judgements), my question is how will the merchants who have taken advantage of this through dramatically increased pricing and purchase free for alls react when liquidity becomes more scarce, buying pool shrinks by a third and the market is flooded with “used” knives?

The situation with not being able to purchase, from the primary market, Spyderco Mule Teams, Sprint Runs and Dealer/Distributor Exclusives will probably stay with us. The best they can do is limit one unit per household. This situation is not unique to Spyderco. Game consoles from Sony and Microsoft were an even bigger market for flippers late last year. Perils of capitalism! C’est la vie!

^^^ This one is a home run IMHO. Stonewashed liners, clip & backspacer send it over the top. LOVE IT!

Congrats! I must say that the stonewashing of the blade, backspacer, clip and compression lock makes it very attractive!

Smallfly 2 are already out to smaller dealers, I still see some in stock at sooner, along with shamans, etc. I would buy it, but I already had a pre order in with KC that I used a gift card for...hopefully they get it soon.

Last mule went out of stock in about 7 minutes, my browser crashed alot but I managed to get one...hopefully this one will be better with the 1 limit.

Militaries dont sell as well because the price, I know that's what put me off initially because I'm used to spydercos costing 100-150 (hell that 20CV green blue manix 2 LW was only 120!). It also seems the secondary market blew the price up...a kind BF member here sold me a 52100 for 180 almost a year ago, now I see them go for like 260+! Crazy.

My thoughts, cheers.

That Spyderco Military 52100 had an original street price of $210 back in June 2016. So, $260 now almost 5 years later isn’t a bad price considering the seller has to pay for PP & USPS fees.

The first CQI Military came out in May 2016 but there hasn’t been a new Military since February 2019.

Military just doesn’t sell in the large quantities like its siblings ParaMilitary2 or Para3 due to its size and price.

I can't speak for Spyderco, but I can tell you on our end a pre-order doesn't do anything for the mad rush, it just turns into a mad rush for the pre-order and then constant emails and calls about when it will ship (regardless of putting a shipping date on the product page). This is one of the reasons we don't offer pre-orders among other reasons.

It works for me, glad the Vendors I use have that in place, wouldn't have the knife(s) otherwise. It is a hassle for them I am sure, nice that they will put up with it, Smallfy 2 coming eventually....

I don't know how you manage your pre-orders but, as a buyer, the reason "we" hassle you about "where's my knife?" is often due to the lack of feedback and information about our particular order.

It's just "empty space" until the knife is finally delivered and that's my experience w/all vendors - not just DLT.

FWIW, as a buyer, here's what I think would help prevent me (and others) from pestering you about an outstanding pre-order:

1) Tell us how many knives are available for sale and where our place in the order queue is.
2) Give us a realistic estimate of the date of shipping for my our orders; and
3) Send an email notice in ADVANCE if you think that shipments will be delayed beyond prior estimates and provide a new ETA for delivery based on the current situation.

Communication is crucial for customer satisfaction (especially for pre-paid orders) but few companies (not just knife companies) seem to understand this.

If I received such information on the few pre-orders that I've placed, I would have never canceled them before the sale (on your end) could be made. I'm sure the vendors will still able to sell the knife that I failed to buy but the process has turned me off entirely.

Just saying . . .
