SPYDERCO-- A thug knife?

A buddy of mine at the Academy had a strange reaction when I showed him my Native: he said that, hwere he is from, Spydercos are associated with gangs. This kid isn't ignorant about knives, either (he likes CRKT and knew Randall Knives) What gives? Are Spydies demonized in their home state?

(I'm back to the field tomorrow night and won't be able to post for three weeks after, so don't think I'm ditching out.)

I thought they probably wouldn't spend the cash to buy Spydies...
Maybe he saw some kind of spydie ripoff?

Really? I am sure that some members of gangs carry spydercos, but I have never heard them referred to as being associated with gangs before.

I would say the closest knives I can relate to gangs would be balisongs (butterfly knives) and switchblades...more so the old stilletos. I definatly woudlnt think of spydercos as being a gang knife. :D

When I think of knives used as weapons by thugs, I honestly think of the typical sears crafstman type metal safety knife. I've heard more stories with those dam things than any knife!!

thugs stick with crappy china made folders, and cheap chrome plated zinc fixed blades, they tend to stick with shivs and dirks, i saw this one website called like hidden weapons or something it is very informative. it tells you the stuff criminals tend to use and how to guard against them

I don't see many Spyderco's used by the criminal class. Mostly it's very cheap copies that you see at a chain store.

If anything Spyderco is a cop knife.

Anybody seen "Training day"??? Denzel Washington uses a Spyderco Endura fully serrated in the movie.

Once when I was having my bun in a Macdonald, I was accused to be associated with terrorists by a friend of mine. He said "he'd heard that" Macdonald had been donating the Irish Republic Army...

Hopfully Spyderco has nothing to do with Macdonald or else I've got to be a terrorist thug!!

That is exactly what I was going to say. Last Saturday night on Cops a officer used a Spyderco Endura.

But.....

I also saw a skinhead site were the maggot recommended a Spyderco Police to use for hurting people.

In the end, it is just a tool and probably gets used by all kinds for all reasons. If Gangbangers use thier blades a lot, and if they will spend for Spyderco, I guess that shows the answewr to the question if Spydercos are any good as a weapon.

But, I once new a guy that said, "45% of all people on earth are Aliens in a secret society".

You can't believe all you hear.

I didn't think that thugs would use a nice knife, but he insists that they are used by gangmembers in his area (Grand Junction). Anyhow, a lot of gang members also like Glocks (although they probably couldn't tell you why they asre such great guns). I just thgouht it was interesting and a little disheartening that quality productsd get a bum rap because certain people like to use them.

I should think that it would be especially disheartening for Sal Glesser who goes to great lengths to keep his knives from acquiring that reputation.

thugs use cheap knives cause if they have to "dispose" of it they won't feel said cause it only cost them five bucks

Thugs in NYC like box cutters, kitchen knives, sharpened screw drivers, etc. I don't think their choice blade would be a Spyderco. They like crudeness because it's cheap and disposable. According to a NYPD friend.

How do you figure that?? The "thug" more-than-likely either stole the knife in the first place, or at least stole the $ to buy the knife with. I really doubt if it was a knife that he "worked" to buy honestly.

As far as "thugs" using Spydies to do harm with...I'm pretty sure that the POS felons would use whatever they came-across, and not necessarily a Spydie.

Hannibal Lector used one (or two), but he was more of a Gentleman thug.
That was the only film I have ever seen where I came out thinking a serial killer was the hero! Weird.

I work in a prosecuting office in a large southwestern city. I have dealt with hundreds of gang-related cases over the past 12 years...and have seen hundreds of different types and brands of blades...but have yet to come across even one Spyderco.

Im sure the look of the Civilian lends itself to imtimidation. Most gangs around here carry guns.

Perhaps they raided some poor guy's Spydie collection and decided to keep them?
I don't see how they're going to spend the money to buy them. I mean, if they did commit a crime, they would want to ditch it.
If they could steel bunch of Cold Steel FBs, would CS be a thug's knife? N.... wait a minute :p :D (j/k)
