SPYDERCO-- A thug knife?

I think it’s the serrations. Even before 9-11 and the whole terrorist thing with Airplanes, it was widely recommended that if traveling by air to not take a serrated knife because it was thought as to be more threatening in looks and more likely to come under the observation of security and their whim as to give you grief over it.

Now, I know you didn’t mention anything about you knife except it’s a Spyderco, but I would bet that yours is fully serrated. Is this maybe where your friend’s and the public perception come from.

Do a test and show a no-knife person two knives, 1 with and 1 without serrations and they will always pick the serrated knife as being scary looking.

I think you are discriminating against gangsters, how do you know, maybe some have good taste?:p
Honestly there is this guy that hangs out by a mini-mart one block from our apartment (this is in east Long Beach, Ca), he hangs out with a rough crowd, I see him playing with a Benchmade AFCK all the time (punching payphone keys with it, slicing one of those awful jerky sticks, ect.) It's real, told him "cool knife" once then he showed it to me when I showed him my Spyderco Wegner.:)
Spydercos are copied more than maybe any other "quality maker," maybe this explains "Spydies " sightings, round hole = Spyderco.

That sounds like a pretty off kilter observation of yer friend there, and I can only think of three rational explanations.

#1 sone gangsta types in his area managed to rob/burglarize a gun store, knife dealer, etc. and thusly put into circulation several spydies in the hands of folks that aint usin' them the way Sal Glesser intended

#2 he's seeing a sh!tload of the cheap spydie rip offs and confusing them. Even up here in Alaska you can pick up Delica and Harpy rip off's for two to five dollars at most any pawnshop and even some gas stations.

#3 when working some of my more....strong back weak mind oriented kinda jobs I've seen a few spydies out in the field, most of them being carried by people that had a tendency to have the occassional brush with the law. Not what you would consider criminally insane, or sociopathic, by any means, but lotsa folks with restraining orders, DWI's, assault records etc. For awhile Wal-Mart was selling Spydie Police, Delica, Endura, Rescue, and Ladybug knives up here, and people from every darn where shop at Wal-Mart. Also it doesn't take a genius to look in the display counter and say "gee whiz, those serrations is MEAN lookin', an' that knife would probably open purty darn quickly...."

One of the biggest things I love about Spyderco is that they make good quality knives the common man/non knife nut can afford. When you put out that kinda quality that most anyone could afford, there's bound to be a few that slip into the wrong hands. But the preferred knife of gangstas? nah.......

Anyone remember that article in Tactical Knives about what the real bad guys are using and all the cops could pull outta the evidence files was Pakistan and China knock offs? Also to the authors entire recollection of his police career he could hardly recall ever seeing or hearing of the thugs carrying a decent knife?

How do you figure that?? The "thug" more-than-likely either stole the knife in the first place, or at least stole the $ to buy the knife with. I really doubt if it was a knife that he "worked" to buy honestly.

As far as "thugs" using Spydies to do harm with...I'm pretty sure that the POS felons would use whatever they came-across, and not necessarily a Spydie.

think about it where would you see a spydie on sale? most likely a knife retail store since i doubt any average store like 711 or whatever would carry spydies. Therefore a guy intending to commit a crime like ie rob a liquor store with a knife would not risk getting caught but trying to steal knife first, and imo any person robbing an establishment would use a gun and most likely only street muggers would use knives

i saw this one website called like hidden weapons or something it is very informative. it tells you the stuff criminals tend to use and how to guard against them.

Manji,
Do you still have this link? I'd be very interested in looking at it. Always nice to know what the enemy might be using against innocents this week.

SPYDERCO-- A thug knife?

A thug knife could be ANY knife. However, IMO, gangs nowadays don't mess with knives, they hide behind their guns. Think of it this way, who would bring a knife to a fight between today's rival gangs? The answer....NOBODY. Guns are their weapons of choice. I don't think that a gang member would spend money on a good Spyderco, they'd rather go and buy some expensive jewelry and such to maintain their image. :barf:  :barf:

I picture gang members to lazy to even use a knife in a fight thats why they invented Dive by shootings.

I think alot of us are assuming too much about thugs.
In this day and age, anyone could be a thug. for all we know, a thug could even be a knife collector.

I agree that the gun would be the chosen weapon for a thug, but i think if a thug had to resort to knives, being alot quieter than an unsilenced gun, they would pick the most intimidating knife they could fine... as mentioned in some earlier posts, the spydie edge looks pretty aggressive compared to a PE knife. Esp something like the Civillian!

Also, I think spyderco make most of their knives very affordable for an excellent quality knife.

I also think that thugs like to 'impress' their fellow thugs, and if they buy something that looks 'impressive' that can influence others. and as mentioned by someone previously, if they can steal money, then i guess that won't be an issue when buying a quality knife.

that's what i think, anyway. :)

Are Spydies demonized in their home state?

Around here, I think they're associated mainly with cowboys, as well as LEOs. (Although it might be a stretch to say that they're connected to any one group of people.)

Spydercos are the only quality knives I've seen offered at a couple of rural hardware stores for ranchers. There's also a series of Spydies with the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association logo etched on the blade.

I would guess that cowboys like them because they're easy to open with gloves on and the serrations work well on things like rope and leather.

Reading the headlines and watching VH1, I can say that a good number of sports stars and rap artists are thugs, and they can certainly afford good gear.

Heya AKADave,

always nice to meet other folks in the Anchorage/Mat-Su area. I just moved back to Wasilla from Anchorage a few months ago myself (love it out here)

I do about 90% of my knife business with Ray and his son Ryan over at Northern Knives. I've known Ray a couple years now, and he's always been really decent to me. His prices are very good as far as B&M shops go, (can almost always find a better price on the net, but i HATE that wait and not gettin' to play with knives before purchase) and incidentally he's made some REALLY nice Kydex sheathes for me.

my email is gcs2inak@hotmail.com if'n ya' wants ta use it. take care an' have a good 'un, eh?

(my apologies for gittin' off topic here, folks)

errrr....criminals are bad and shouldn't have knives, especially not Spyderco knives..

there...back on topic...:D

Really?
I swear I thought I saw a Endura because of the size and stainless handles but I could have seen wrong. Maybe I'll go watch it again.

Sadly, I wouldn't be surprised if some criminals carry Spydercos. I doubt it would be many of the young gangbangers doing drive-bys. I imagine some of the "gangstas" that are loaded with money and have all the jewelry may have acquired a taste in quality knives.

That said, it would seem the majority of gangbangers who even carry a knife at all would mostly carry boxcutters, POS knockoffs of Buck and Spyderco knives, very cheap, Chinese "dragon" lockbacks, home-made shanks, screwdrivers/awls, and some even carry razor blades hidden in their mouths or between their fingers.

I live in Winnipeg (murder capital of Canada), and most murders out here are stabbings, not shootings. I've had a couple buddies get stabbed by gangsters in muggings and such (luckily, neither died), and both times, it was with kitchen knives. Some of the older members might have sawed-off stolen hunting rifles or smuggled Ballisongs, but I've never heard of a knife attack here with anything worth more than $5 (and that's CANADIAN). It's mostly cheap novelty knives they pick up from our so-called Army Surplus shop, or butcher/steak knives swiped from Wal-Mart. Often, they cut right to the chase and use a broken beer bottle.

imho MOST street thugs are dopers, and ANY item of value (ie knives/guns/jewelry/etc) will have been sold/traded for dope probably LONG before they rob anyone. most commit crimes to support a dope habit, and hey, if they have a $100 spydie, they will trade it for dope(or sell it for $20 or so, $20 seems to be the magic #, its what a std crack rock sells for) and after they have used the dope, THEN they will steal a cheap POS knife and use it to rob some one for MORE dope. or use a rock. or a bottle. or a stick.

but ANYTHING of value will be gone, unless the guy just finished ripping off some ones knife and runs into you and robs ya, before they can get to the pawn shop - its easier to sell a knife than rob someone, ya gotta understand dopers ... (regrettably i understand all to well w/my bro-in - law, but thats another story, lol)
