Hey yall,

I was wondering what yall thought i should do. I recently received a spyderco manix 2...

i really love the knife, but the problem is that when i received it, the blade was not centered and the grind was kind of messy.

my guess was that i got one that was returned to the seller and they just sent it back out. I got it from amazon.com through one of their sellers. I sent him an email and i received no response.

Will spyderco help me out? The grinds are not terribly worry-some because it is very very sharp and i plan on using it, they will work themselves out. the problem is that the blade was ground incorrectly causing the blade to turn to the left(i believe, i dont have it infront of me right now).

I ask because i have had this problem before with a kershaw or two that i sent to them with descriptions of the problems, and all they did was sharpen them and send them back!!! they were already sharp when i sent them...:grumpy:

What should i do?

Honestly, Spyderco sucks at grinding and sharpening knives... If you send it into them, they're just going to tell you that "it's within tolerances."

It might suck to look at, but rest assured that it isn't going to affect the functionality of the knife.

a) you could ask advice in Spyderco subforum with pictures.
b) you could now send your manix for Tom Krein for regrind and sharpening :D

The grind on my Manix 2 wasn't exactly a beauty either. A picture is worth a thousand words though. Let us see if it is out of the ordinary. Sometimes Spyderco chimes in also. Post a picture.

Have you tried adjusting the screws to get the blade centered?

I believe Spyderco will ask for $5 for shipping to resharpen it. (That's 3rd party information--I haven't sent them anything--so someone might need to confirm that.)

Forget about the non-centered blade...who cares?? Its not a 800$ custom knife, its a user! Ive got many knives who're abit off-center. As long as the blade dosent rub the liner/handle then i couldnt care less. It dosent affect the knifes cutting capabilities.

As for the messy grinds...does it affect usability? Im guessing no...So keep it, sharpen it, straighten it and use it! That is what its built for!

I've never had a problem with my grind line's from Spyderco. But the off center blade seems to be the norm these days.
If the grinds are bothering you call Charlynn at Spyderco customer service and see what she can do for you.

Bigbre, the knife you have is definitely not the norm for a Spyderco blade, nor does Spyderco 'suck' at blade grinds or sharpening. I have dozens of Spyderco knives that argue to the contrary.

As was suggested, an inquiry and a couple of pics in the Spyderco sub-forum will probably result in more information. Sal Glesser is not the sort of person that would let your described problem slide.

Right... because they..... just.... suck? Based on what do you make this claim?

Post a picture, I'd like to see this "sloppy" grind. Off center blade is not an issue unless you're a perfectionist. Just loosen up the pivot and stop screws and carefully retighten them.

No, not because they "just suck." I base this on ALL of the Spydercos I own and have owned. The following knives have off-centered grinds/blades:

1. Stretch 2 FRN
2. D4 Brown FFG
3. D4 ZDP
4. D4W
5. Native I
6. Endura ZDP (this one even had a VERY uneven saber grind)
7. Regular D4
8. White Endura

The ones that are NOT off-centered:

1. Spin
2. Caly 3

And as for the sharpening comment, I've sent in 6 knives in total to the factory for sharpening. 3 of them came back pretty dull. And the only Spyderco knives that had an edge that was above-average in sharpness was the Native and Brown D4 FFG, and white Endura. My ZDP Endura came pretty dull, and my D4W came dull as HELL.

I know that all you sycophants believe that Spyderco can do no wrong, but I'm just calling them as I see them. They make a great performing knife, but as far as I've seen, they can't get grinds or sharpening right.

I respectfully disagree with everything you just said due to my experiences and others. It may also help if you learned to sharpen your knives correctly (if you don't know how.) and bought a knife over $60 designed to please the masses.

Anywho, to the op: Unfortunately, mistakes happen. Every company in existence has made some less then perfect products. If I had to recommend you a Spyderco that will have a perfect fit/finish 99% of the time, I'd recommend a cf/zdp stretch or Bradley.

Right. So your exposure to ten Spyderco knives (vs. the hundred or so I've had, only 5-6 with off center blades and no grind issues. Not to mention the countless other people) stinks. Glad we cleared that up.

hey yall,

i just got off work and dont currently have the manix with me...i will post pictures later tonight if i can if not tomorrow.

Personally this is the first knife that i have had from spydie that has any issues...that is why it is disappointing to me. spydie is my favorite company to date.

thanks to those who posted...and be nice yall...

 Send it to Krein and the thing will have a custom quality edge and you will be blown away by the cutting ability.

Please note, if you do this, you will want it done to all your other knives as well, and you'll end up re-profiling everything you have over the next two weeks.

If you do not like your off-centered blade and uneven grind, you may be out of luck with spyderco. There have been more than a few people who have been told that these problems were "within tolerances" and would not be a warranty repair. So it has to be pretty bad (such as being so far off center it rubs the liner) to get warranty service. However, in some of these cases, special treatment has been obtained from the owner (even after rejection by spyderco warranty/repair) by voicing their complaint in the spyderco forum. But sometimes not.

I've had no issues with my Spyderco's and after hours and hours of scanning forums it appears to me that Spyderco's customer service is pretty decent.
Some people will complain no matter what, life has taught me that much.
Hope things work out for you.

My blue manix 2 came stupid sharp and perfectly centered. After some use it developed a TINY bit of blade-play.... I sent it in and they said it was normal for the type of lock but they would do all they could. I just got it back and the blade is as tight as new and they "touched up" the blade for me - it's even sharper than before and the grind is still perfect... this is merely one experience, but I will be buying more spyderco's after the m4 mille comes out (trying to limit spending......)

I've been pretty lucky with all the Spydercos I have owned. None were off-center that I could tell. I can recall 2 or 3 that were not as sharp as I'd like or had uneven grinds. Those few I just fixed myself by sharpening them how I'd like.
