Spyderco Amsterdam Meet 2010 Report - Prototype Pictures

Hi Wouter, thanks for sharing those great pics. The Balance is a work of art and that translucent Manix... well, I must confess I wasn't very much into the regular Manix, but this one is a must have. :)

I love the look of the Jason Breeden Rescue -- wish it was being offered in s30v though although I understand vg10 given its being made in japan.

This knife will have a VG-10 blade and it will be made in Japan. The G10 for the handle btw, will be shipped to Japan so the knife can be assembled there. Incidentally, when the reverse happens –when parts are shipped to Golden for assembly- Spyderco generally won’t mark the knife as ‘made in USA’. This Jason Breeden model has IMO a similar heft and feel as the Captain. It may seem a little blocky, but it feels pretty good in the hand and it’s lighter than it looks from these pics.

I see someone looked at the "Captain" print the correct way...LOL!!!:D
That looks like a knife I could use right there.... In the field the kitchen or on the job I could make use of that design...;):thumbup:

Exactly what I tough! If the blade is big enough this could be a great folding cheff knife.

Somebody knows the size of this one?

Sorry for my english :o

The clear Manix looks promising. Is this clear material FRN or something similar to the BBL cage? If the production version stays in this configuration, I would be interested to see how rigid the handle is. However, removing the liners is a sure way to reduce the weight. This configuration would also appease the people who are so uncomfortable with the lack of fastening hardware in the back portion of the G-10 version.

The Matriarch was made around 10 years ago in limited production at the request of a South African distributor. With the rise in violence toward women, the Matriarch was made to support a specific self-defense class. The technique apparently involves cutting the tendons behind the knees, leaving the attacker immobile. The matriarch takes its name from the lead female in elephant herds. The main diffe rences with the original model are the full flat grind and the brown FRN. It kind of looked like a chocolate color to me. Both PE and SE models will be available for this sprint run.

This is another model in the ‘bug line’, the biggest so far. It’s slightly smaller than the Kiwi Slipit and equally tough to open. Part of that will smooth in the production process, but it will resist ‘flicking’ to accommodate ‘flicking laws’. The Grasshopper, like the bug and honeybee, is a Chinese made slipit.

The Native 4 prototype looked very similar to the CF Native 4. This production prototype is made from G10, it lost the swedge and there is jimping on the spine. The jimping continues for about 0.25 inch on the spine of the locking bar. It’s a very refined feature.

When the 25th anniversary Delica was made, the original idea was to make it with the blue jigged bone handle you see here. However, it was felt that it didn’t match Ed Schempp’s excellent bolsters. The maker has been sitting on the blue jigged bone handles ever since. Now the handles will be used in this sprint run. The Damascus blade is made with a VG-10 core and the outer layers are also made from a stainless steel.

WOW. I am impressed.

I cannot wait for the Native with steel liners(FINALLY). FFG is darn near perfect for that kind of setup!
Thanks for the pics!

I have to stop here for today, but I decided to stop with a nice surprise (at least to me). This is a Manix 2 with a clear FRN Handle. The Manix has gone through quite an evolution, and it’s still evolving. The original goal was to create a ‘ small’ tough and do-all folder. The original Mini Manix was too heavy for most users. The Manix 2 has incorporated some major refinements: less weight, bigger lanyard hole, the lock (and opening action). This FRN version is a lightweight alternative to the Manix 2.

This prototype was a tiny bit ‘squeaky’ in the handle, when it was tightly gripped, but I’m sure that will be solved in the production version. This handle turns the tank-like regular Manix 2 into a lightweight. It feels very light in the hand with all the heft going to the blade. The see-through is a cool feature. It turns a ‘tactical folder’ into a techno-gizmo and conversation piece. The ergos were very nice. FRN is always softer to the touch than G10 slabs and steel liners, and this FRN handle was no exception to the rule. According to Eric this FRN Manix 2 won’t be as strong as the regular model, but not by much.

Wouter

I love that unlined clear FRN look. It really shows how much different it is from a cheap plastic it's commonly compared to.
