I just started collecting knives about three months ago and I have yet to buy an example of either of these two companies. With a price limit of $50 each, which model from these two companies would be recommended?
I know $50 limit is low for a good knife but I am trying to keep on a budget and at the same time I get nervous when I have not bought a knife for a week. There is a good sized gun and knife show this weekend about 1.5 hours away that I am planning on attending and should be able to pick up most models at the show after handling them, some models bought from the internet just do not feel good in the hand.

For Spyderco it's easy; take the Tenacious, you will not be disappointed.
For cheaper Kershaws others would have to chime in,

Kershaw leek is a good place to start . . .
+1 on the leek, it's a nice knife.

From spyderco I'd take the Native (probably S30V version), I like it way more than Delica (although that's good choice too).

Kershaw...Shallot,Storm I&II,Lahar,Leek,Junkyard Dog I&II,& a lot more

$50 is enough to buy decent Spyderco like Native, Native3, Delica, Delica wave, Centofante 3 or 4, Endura on line, not so sure about gun show, prices can be much higher over there.
I personally would go with Native, great ergos, great steel. It is $40 at Wall-mart. If local store doesn't have it, than you can get at walmart.com and get it delivered to local wallmart for free. Few on-line dealers have it little over $40 as well.

The Native is a fantastic knife, I love mine alot. While at walmart you can pick up a Kershaw Scallion in all black (DLC) and with 3 holes in the blade. This is a walmart exclusive and its a wonderful knife!

Buy both of these a six pack and a pizza with 1 bill and you're set! :)

I found my Native does not fit my hand. I would go for a Delica or a Scallion, I have a Chive so the bigger Scallion should be good.

Kershaw's Junkyard Dog II is a lot of knife for under $50 street price. IMO it's a better piece than many $100+ knives.

Setting a limit of $50 per knife, I'd say you should avoid either of these brands. Buying their low price models will just blow out your limit and make you spend big bucks for the better ones. You've been warned ;):D

For Kershaw, go with the Leek. It is one of the better Kershaws I have tried.

For Spyderco, I suggest the Centofante 3 or 4. It is typical Spyderco in quality and design. You will get a real feel for what Spyderco is all about with one of these. Some of the larger and heavier Spyderco like the Manix seem to be less Spyderco like if that makes any sense.

I guess when I think about Spyderco, the knife that seems to represent that company is the Delica 3. It was a FRN handled knife with a thin pointy blade. It weighed nothing and could be carried anywhere while wearing anything. It was a very strong knife though. That is what Spyderco means to me, a strong light weight knife that anyone can carry anywhere.

I can't really tell you anything different than what folks have already said. For Kershaw I'd definitely look at the Leek and JYD models. As for Spyderco, the Delica 4 is damn hard to beat overall. You might want to try one that's fully serrated and see what that edge can do.
