Spyderco and zip ties

Here is a ZT0300 that I waved. Looks good and works great.

Same with a Pohl Force Foxtrot 1...

I waved my Cara Cara 2. I like the smaller zip ties because they don't stick out as much so it looks a little better. The still can tear up your pans though. I like using the watch/pen pocket on my jeans for waving. Its a little tighter so the zip tie catches better. Its mostly a gimmick since I don't think I have any actual need for this feature but its worth a shot to see if you like it. Zip ties aren't exactly expensive.

I don't really get the hate for wave mods. You either like them or you don't. You might think they're ugly, but they work. I wave-modded a Cold Steel Voyager (large, clip point) and it worked like a charm. I've since moved away from waved knives, though, as I'm more keen on flippers these days.

I actually liked the function a zip tie added to the Spyderhole - it gives you a wave option and it gives you a thumbstud that allows you to open the knife without touching the blade.

I would warn those looking at waved knives to consider what that style of opening does - it causes sudden and sharp impacts on locking surfaces. My Endura Wave developed some pretty notable vertical play, and the Tenacious I had ziptied wore in the lockbar considerably while I was waving it open. Also, lockbacks with wave features can run into an issue where you can wave a knife open so quickly that the tang of the blade will bounce off of the locking bar. You'll hear the snap, but the blade won't be locked. You can prevent that by waving a bit slower, but, if you're putting that much thought into it, you might as well just get a knife with a different opening mechanism as you've entirely defeated the purpose of the wave.

When I used zip tie it shredded my pants, so I smoothed it and then didn't catch on pockets.

Wish they'd make more waved knives.

Is this disinformation propaganda, spread by the tech suppression unit of the retail security secret spec-ops units? They might be trying to keep civilians from the mods used by their elite operatives in order to maintain that split second advantage in deployment necessary for survival in the tactical stealth retail security world.

Do you even own one? It seems not.

How very presumptive of you...

Just a little friendly criticism, I don't personally care for the look of them or the feel, they feel...cheap. Yes, I do own and have owned them, wouldn't have commented otherwise, I've seen a few mods by CM, that's the way to go:thumbup: not silly zip ties:D

They offer a delica and an endura with a wave feature on the blade already. Why put a zip tie in the spydie hole?

That is tastefully done.

Eewww!

Might as well cut everything off the blade that sits above the handle when closed and grind a double edge (like I did to this BM630)!

Here is my zip tied Byrd Cara Cara 2

Works fairly well didn't have any pocket problems but it's only been on a couple of months and don't edc it that much anymore. The thing that always worries me about waves is that if someones behind you and you might whip the blade out right at them. But none the less they can be nifty with stuff like gloves and what not.

When I got my first spyderco, an endura 4 I was just getting into knives, and when I heard about the zip tie mod, I tried it, It worked, but I though it ruined the appeal of the design, and was rough on pockets. I am pipe smoker ( and collector) and have pipe clears everywhere. Bored and playing with the endura I wrapped a bristle cleaner around the hole and it has the same effect. By now I have beaten that knife up enough that I dont care what it looks like, and it is uniquely mine.
However, I did buy a matriarch 2 wave, the same handle as the endura, and I must say the opening is perfect. The matriarch is incredibly impractical, ijust loved the look, but with frn handles and the hourglass clip, they do a great wave. a waved delica is next on my list. The zip tie ruins the look. the wave jjust makes it look weird, but Id don't mind it. If you love the wave, it is worth buying a delica or endura. worth every pennny and then some. If you don't need the was, the delica or endura ffg are great . and pocket friendly, compare to g 10 handles and tight clips.. pocket wear, however is normal for any edc knife clipped to a pocket. like a guitarist's calloused fingers.

I used to have zip ties on my Tenacious. grinded a hole in my pocket in a week. cut it off and waved it. or get an Emerson open.

Couldn't Agree more, if you want a wave type knife then buy one, don,t try and cobble up a homemade one.

Problem is factory waved spydies look worse then zip tied spydies. Maybe I'm the only one but I find the look of them absolutely awful! That's not to say the zip tied ones look good either. Both look bad, but the zip tie can come off and the knife goes back to normal.

I guess you have a point there, and at the end of the day its your knife so do whatever you like. Doesn't matter what anybody else thinks.

Very true. As of now the only one I've ziptied is the tuff and honestly it's not by choice and I really wish I didn't have it there but my tuff is extremely hard to open. What I'd really like to do is just get a nice thumb disk added on there.
