Spyderco Aqua Salt up for sale at KW!

SE for sure...only because it performs so much better than pe in H1.

So I've heard! I only have experience with a SE Tenacious which dulled after a few rope cuts. I have a wicked edge, but looks like I'll have to pick up a Sharpmaker along with the SE Aqua :D

That will be one of your better investments in this little hobby. ;)

What is the benefit of (TiCN) blade coating on this model?

Non-reflective finish, other than that nothing...having a coating on H1 to prevent rust is like wearing a belt and suspenders. In the SHOT show intro video, Janich talks about how in addition to many military people asking for a return of the Aqua Salt to production, they also often mentioned a non-reflective finish to the blade.

Is it worth getting a PE in H1? How bad is it?

Pretty bad, like on par with low grade stainless found on China made knives, 8Cr13 and the like. The whole "work hardening" thing is a bunch of crap in terms of manual sharpening increasing edge retention. There is another thread on here from a well respected member (Surfinggringo) who has been using a plain edge Pacific Salt H1 recently to cut up fish and the like, his reports show abysmal edge retention of the plain edge.

Trust us, go serrated.

Hi BlackKnight, it depends on what you are cutting. PE H1's major drawback (I think) is it just doesn't get quite hard enough. So in use on hard or highly abrasive materials, the edge is prone to plastic deformation...which can include rolling and flattening. On the flip side, this steel is exceptionally tough and is very resistant to chipping or damage. There are members on the Spyderco forum who have used pe H1 extensively for whittling and wood work with great success. Cutting meat or other soft materials will also be an area where you won't really notice the issue. Both iterations have their place but if you are using this knife for high pressure cuts on fibrous, abrasive or hard material then I would definitely go with serrated edge.

it also eliminates ugly scratches which H1 is being the steel is soft. By the way... after a few fishing/kayak trips, I would prefer a coated blades/non reflective finish too... because even I use my sunglasses, the sun reflection on my satin finished blades could blind me some seconds. and it is not nice :)

I guess Aqua Salt in SE would do very well attached to my PFD

Haven't visited the Spyderco forum in a while - came back to say I pre-ordered one of these through KW! Looks like I'm good company based on this thread. I just pulled the trigger on this about 5 minutes ago. :-)

To the SE vs. PE H1 debate: I had a PE Dragonly 2 Salt for a long time (just sold it here on the forums to put the money towards the Aqua). I never had a problem with edge retention. I did little touch ups with it during the time I had it. The most strain I ever put on it was some whittling/carving type tasks with wood/bamboo and cutting parcord. But it had the original edge on it when I sold it.

I also have had no problem with edge retention on my PE H1 Dragonfly. Admittedly it only gets very light tasks. I just strop it ant the end of the day.

the H1 Dfly is a bad comparison as it has by far the best edge geometry of any Salt folder. The Pac Salt and Aqua Salt are much thicker knives with much thicker edges. My SS Dfly in VG10 is an anomaly due to the same edge geometry, and even though I like VG10 fine, I would think it has mystical properties if my only experience was with this one knife. Laser sharp and needs next to no sharpening, Caly 3.5 and Endura are different beasts and while they sharpen easy they do not retain the edge like the Dfly.

Wow that was fast....

First impressions:
1) Light and nimble - feels like a "fast" knife
2) Spyderco continues to make me a believer in FRN handles. Feels great in hand, nice and grippy.
3) Not sure on the sheath yet. Going to have to get some actual use with it to see. I may be shipping it off to JD at 710 for a custom sheath.

Also, any help on what this little guy is for? It was stuffed in the cardboard sleeve protecting the blade.

Looks like a very useful blade shape! I look forward to hearing how it works for you.

That ring, by the way, is supposed to go over the tip of the knife to prevent it from punching through any packaging while en route.
