Saw a picture of Spyderco's ATR prototype today and dang it looks great, the lock looks good, the blade style the ergonomics and everything, this is one I can't wait to get. I wonder is the hood is removable on it? although I like the hood and would leave it.

Picture borrowed from Knives Illistrated Febuary 2003 issue:

It does look nice.
I was also wondering if the hood would be removable like it is on the Salsa.

The hood is removable, but it will leave the slot in the blade.

I have found the hood to be effective when needed and not in the way. I would recommend trying the piece with the hood before removing it.

I was very doubious when I saw the cobra hood on the Salsa. For me it seemed to go against one of the things I really liked about previous Spyderco knives, their very simple but elegant lines, and nothe extra there that didn't need to be. Within 2 hours of getting the Salsa I was hooked on the cobra hood and wouldn't part with it. It really is a case of function over athetics.

As much as I like it I wouldn't like to see the cobra hood on all Spyderco's (I'm still a sucker for simple flowing lines ;) ), but where the knife is a real worker (and show piece second) then the cobra hood is a bonus.

I agree i like the feel of the hood myself, but was wondering out of bordem if it came of more than anything. I know of about 5 Spyderco's on my list for this year already now this one makes 6.

I'm definitely getting one, and a couple co-workers say they want one after seeing the catalog pic!
