Spyderco ATS-55 versus VG-10

I'm looking for a small very lightweight EDC, that has some tough steel.

I've narrowed my choices down to a Ladybug or a Dragonfly. The Ladybug has the VG-10 and the Dragonfly sports the ATS-55.

Does anyone have any experiences with these two steels? Which do you prefer?

Thanks!

Both are good steels. The VG-10 holds its edge a bit better in my experience. Just to make your choice either easier or harder, the newest SS Dragonflies have VG-10 as well. My personal preference would be the Dragonfly, as i have a hard time manipulating the Ladybug in my somewhat oversized hands.

ATS55 is my favourite steel. Weird or not, that's the way it is. I have used a lot of steels - ATS34, VG10, S30V, Sandvik, etc, etc, etc. I just love ATS55 on a smaller folder. Easy to sharpen to a razor and holds it for a good while. VG10 is fantastic also (probably close to even) and I like it better on a bigger knife or FB.

Quite possible, but since neither of the knives under discussion is available in either D2 or S30V, so what?

I've had knives in ATS-55 and VG-10, and prefer VG-10. VG-10 seems to take a sharper edge with slightly less effort. ATS-55 was a good steel though.

I find the ats-55 takes a little more effort to sharpen, but either would be a good choice.
I personally prefer the VG-10 if it was available in that model.Just my opinion though!
regards,Rick.
(Like electric zombie said!) LOL,i guess i should read all the posts & not just the question!

Thanks for the help. Sounds like both are quality steels, with the ATS-55 requiring a bit more effort to sharpen.

What about with a serrated edge (I will cutting a lot of cardboard, plastic, etc..)? Is one preferable over the other?

Ats 55 is harder to sharpen because it's final temper is 61-63rc and it holds an edge a long time. I had a nice double blade spydie with one ferocious upswept clip and one serrated sheepsfoot blade... i cant remember what it was called but it seems like it was a Dadley? if you can find one it would handle everything you need in a folder. As far as tough goes i assume you mean edge holding as none of these steels mentioned are tough.

The name you are groping for is Dyad ;) The C44P&S Dyad is quite a cutter, I've been carrying one for a year or so now, along with its little brother the C39 Dyad Jr.

Personally, I prefer plain edge for almost everything I do with a knife, including cardboard cutting. YMMV.

ATS-55 is excellent, but I had a problem with tips snapping off on Delicas made from that material. I don't know if it was the hardening process, brittleness, what have you. Never had a problem with tips snapping on VG-10, nor for that matter on the old Gin-1 steel.
