2012 Most Innovative American Design: Spyderco Autonomy ( from the facebook page of bladeHQ, blade show winners)

Any details on this?

google yields nothing but the fact that they won an award for it. American made. Maybe an auto to replace the citadel? Your guess is as good as mine.

It's an auto, made in the USA for the US Coast Guard and uses H-1 steel. Blade is what I'd call a semi-sheepsfoot, button is designed for ease of use while wearing gloves. From what I heard at BladeShow, due to the amount of H-1 Spyderco had to purchase, we'll be seeing it in some other knives from Golden as well.

Did Spyderco win any other awards?

EDIT: Nevermind, looks like they got one, Most Innovative American Design.

Good job.

There is a lot of innovation in that design that is not obvious to the naked eye. It was designed so that no areas on the knife could form pockets that could allow for standing water. Also, the entire spring mechanism that allows for the automatic opening is part of the entire pivot unit. If the spring wears out, the entire pivot unit is unscrewed and replaced with another pivot and torqued down.

The Google-fu is strong in me.

I'm not really an auto kinda guy, but that looks nice. Great job spyderco:thumbup:

Oh man I wish I could legally own an auto. Please make more models in H-1. I'm dying for some g-10 or titanium scaled models.

Here is what the free Merriam-Webster had to say about it...

Definition of AUTONOMY
1: the quality or state of being self-governing; especially: the right of self-government
2: self-directing freedom and especially moral independence
3: a self-governing state

INNOVATIVE AMERICAN DESIGN? You betcha. Maybe Sal should run for President...

I think this describes Sal and the boys pretty well. My favorite blade company by far.

I am very new to Spyderco. I have been in the market for a new knife and i came across the spyderco autonomy automatic knife and I wanted to know everything about Spyderco their knives and specifically this knife from all you seasoned knife experts.
Thanks

I think that writer's views regarding automatic knives, especially that they're somehow more dangerous than guns, is wrong. Yes, the Autonomy's button takes considerable force to operate. I was intentionally designed that way to compensate for it being large and very exposed and because the original Coast Guard version does not have a mechanical safety. Yes, the Autonomy fires hard. But, for that matter so does a just about every side opening automatic out there today. Heck, a $40 Boker AK-74 fires just as hard.

I've owned the black version since they first came out, and just got the brand new "non Coast Guard" orange version. Both are built like a tanks and, since they're only available serrated, H-1 was an excellent and logical choice of steel. Aside from the lack of a plain edged version, my only complain is that, like a lot of other automatics including the Citadel and Embassy, I find the orientation of the safety to be counter-intuitive. IMHO it would be much more logical, and smoother, if pushing the safety back engaged it and pushing it forward disengaged it. That way, your thumb would be moving toward, rather than away from, the firing button when you released the safety.

It's typical view someone that is able to get something others are restricted from. The "it's OK for me, but not the people "below" me" attitude.

I would be willing to bet if auto knives were made available to everyone across the country tomorrow there would still be 100+ x's more injuries from basic kitchen knives than autos. Can you tell I'm bitter?

Nice collection!

This auto is a beast!! It fires HARD!! It's like having a pocket chain saw!!
Seeing what a great auto Spydie makes, it's sad they don't make more auto models.
I love this one and am awaiting an orange one!
