Spyderco benchstones / mirror bevel?

I have a Spyderco sharpmaker with stock rods, and a leather stropman strop with black and green compound on the way
I like it but I want to free hand sharpen

should I buy the Spyderco benchstones medium, fine, and ultra fine.
they can get the mirror edge it seems, but they are very pricey...

or alternatives for lower cost stones, I'll be sharpening small folding knives.
