Im thinking about buying the sprint run spyderco military with BG-42. Anyone have one or have had experience with spyderco's BG-42? I hear Chris Reeves heat treated BG-42 is really good stuff, is spyderco's pretty identical? How fine of an edge will this stuff take?

Comparing my BG42 Military against my S30V Manix, both with identical bevels of 10 degree main bevels and 15 degree micro bevels:
- Both passed high pressure pointings of hickory rake handle without edge damage.
- Edge-holding seems essentially identical.
- Forming the bevels of the BG42 blade was much easier.

The BG42 blade is easier to sharpen and easier to maintain than the S30V blade - advantage to BG42.

Hope this helps!

Well, I don't know about easy to maintain....depends what you compare it to and I never had problems maintaining S30V either (though it is a b!+ch to reprofile).

Also, I don't know how fine an edge it will support, I haven't taken it anywhere close to its limits. I assume that you plan on heavily reprofile it, if you talk about how fine an edge it will take? If you are simply talking about a well formed edge, it will get quite sharp, not too different from VG-10, both are high purity vaccum smelts. But then again, at the Spyderco factory angles, S30V will take a very sharp edge as well, even if not like A2 for example does, but still well beyond shaving.

However, I found that my BG-42 CF Mili has proven itself (at the factory angle) to outlast any other blade I have. Edgeholding is quite impressive IMHO. And considering the rest of the package, it has, for me, set the bar on which to measure other folders especially if you consider that it can be had for well under $200.
