Today I got the byrd cara cara with a combo edge in all stainless steel, really nice, and the sharpmaker, so I can keep all my blades sharp.

This is probably a dumb question, but what is everyone's experience using it to sharpen non-spyderco knives?

I'm going to put away the buy for a couple of months (yeah right lol) but next up is the bill moran fixed blade (heard some good things about it) or a fully serrated, we'll see.

the sharpmaker can take on any brand or type of knife, except for case-hardened bayonets ;) . you can sharpen everything on it

some blades cannot be sharpened on it without being reprofiled
run a little magic marker down the edge of the blade, swipe it over the sharpmaker 3 or 4 times and see where the marker is missing on the edge
if the marker is missing up the blade a little then it will need to be reprofiled (read as sitting infront of the tv doing it for hours)
every blade in my house gets sharpened on the sharpmaker

Thanks for the tip, I will check this when I get home and see my other knives. It looks pretty easy to use from reading the book last night.

go ahead and sharpen up everything with a blade in your home (that's what everybody does with their new sharpmakers), but if you run into something with an edge angle >40 degrees better use something else than the brown stones to do the reprofiling.

either invest in diamond-coated rods for the sharpmaker or get a very coarse benchstone to thin out the edge.

when you have to thin out the edge of a knife, do yourself a favor and do it at 30 degrees, so you won't have to sharpen long on 40 degrees to get it hair popping.
