Have the black Spyderco blades always been DLC or is the DLC only a recent coating for the blades?

Also, what black blade and handle combos exist, and on what knives can they be found? I know there are a bunch of different combos out there on a variety of models, but I have never seen a list of them in one place.

I don't ever remember having a black painted spydie blade. DLC is the only black I've seen from them, even on the earlier countersunk pocket clip models. They were supposed to come out with the black blade endura and I'm still sitting here with my fingers crossed! lol I hate that some of the black blade models all have serrations on them!

I'm by no means an expert but I'm pretty certain that there are several different types of black coatings 'in play' depending on the model/price point. Some, like the PM2 and Manix 2 G10 specifically say "DLC" while others, like the Tenacious, do not. Perhaps an "expert" will chime in. :D

Correct

I'm not expert but I do own a few black bladed knives from spyderco. The black combo edged delica and endura I believe is a black oxide coating.holds up fairly well, comparable to the pm2 and M2.the Tenacious seems more of a painted on coating scratches easily.I wouldn't recommend any of the Chinese made blades with coating. My delica combo blade made in Seki city Japan is my everyday work knife. It sees lots of action and holds up very well

Any idea what color the handles were with each of these?

Most if not all black pm2 offered orange on an exclusive .but if any of these offered other than black it would be on the military and paramilitary model I believe

The Japanese blades are coated with titanium carbonitride. I believe that the Chinese and Taiwanese knives also each use a different coating as well. Sal has explained that they use the highest quality coating available in each location and that DLC is only available in the states.

Only the knives made in Golden have DLC coatings.

I will say that the blade coating on my PM2 is head and shoulders more durable than my Pacific Salt's. I like the way the wear looks though!

Only USA made models have the DLC, if I recall. Titanium carbonitride is used on the Japanese knives. I am not certain what is used elsewhere.

I brought a similar topic up a year or so ago and it was amazing how many folks did not respond well. But, I think Spyderco does a great job with these blade coatings and there is no reason we cannot have them in other colors besides black. Brown or gray would look pretty good, don't you all think?

PPT 2015 sprint run is TiCN and made in Taiwan. It's a beautiful finish BTW with more of a sheen and warmth than DLC.
