I was super excited to receive my new Manix 2 s30v knife when it arrived two days ago. I cut one piece of cardboard yesterday and already the black coating is scrapped up badly. Why is it that every forum i read swears by the duribilty of Spyderco coating. And yet, here I am with a blade that already looks two years old?
To be fair, I love the knife and knew that a black blade would scrape. I wear those scrapes proudly. But a one time cut cardboard scrape all up and down my blade two days after purchase? That is were my issue is. Is there anybody else out there that shares my pain?

I doubt that the coating scraped off, it's very likely just cardboard embedded in the DLC coating.

Spyderco's coating is about as good as it gets.

^^^ This. Try cleaning it off with rubbing alcohol. If it did scrape off to the metal it's defective and should be sent back to Spyderco.

ETA: Now if it were Cold Steel it would be very plausible. The coating on those knives falls off if you stare at them to long.

This is the thing about coated blades. The coating will wear off. Even after only minimal use, it's gonna look "less than brand new".

If you're this concerned about it, perhaps don't buy knives with dlc or other blade coatings.
Another option would be to not use the knife. If you use the knife, the coating will wear. Period. So try not to be so bummed about it.

Welcome to the forums sir.

Why is it that every forum i read swears by the duribilty of Spyderco coating. And yet, here I am with a blade that already looks two years old? I contacted Spyderco and the best she would do for me is to tell me to send the blade in (I would have to pay shipping) and, if they decide it needs to be fixed, I'd be lucky enough to not have to pay 5 dollar return shipping. That sure sounds like a pricey hassle for a knife that shouldn't be having these issues. And my money is on them telling me that it is just normal wear. Plus, who wants to wait for it to return when it should have been made right in the first place? I was surprised because I hear nothing but positive reviews on Spydercos customer service and she sort of treated me like I was new to blades. She told me that I should expect black blade scrapping. Of course I should! But one piece of cardboard??? Please stand behind your products Spyderco. And a little sympathy on the phone goes a long way to make a customer feel better.

How do you expect Spyderco to handle the situation other than how they handled it the first time over the phone?

Like Spyderco said, send them the knife and let them handle it right.

And for here: We have a saying; Pics or it didn't happen. Post up some pics and let us look. I'm no expert on DLC but letting others see can't hurt.

I just got in a Spyderco Southard BLACK that is titanium carbo-nitride, IIRC.
Have not tried it yet. Love the black, but would hate to see it scraped up.

Joined just to complain about his knife. Hopefully it isn't a fake but without the OP providing anything helpful like where he bought it, how much he paid for it, or pics nobody will know.

If you clean the blade with some rem oil or something similar it will remover the marks the cardboard makes for the most part. Coated blade always show more of a trail from CB, tape, food etc. But it provides protection from corrosion , acid and marking up the steel itself. Just clean the darn thing and use it. If you have experience with black coatings you would know this and get a stone wash or satin finish instead.
Also DLC is good stuff as is cerakote and boron carbide. They will all perform better than teflon or other cheap coatings.
If you want a coating that will not show residue I would recommend a different knife. Boron carbide has a high polish and keeps itself clean.
DLC has more of a flat finish therefore is not self cleaning and takes more work to shine up again.
I love coatings, but only from two companies spyderco and strider. DLC is the best from spyderco in my opinion and I am about to try my first CeraKote.
Enjoy it.
Matt

I've cut a shit load of cardboard with my DLC Military and just by wiping the blade with rubbing alcohol you can't tell it's been used. Sorry.

Let's give OP a chance to get back to us. I'll bet it's just that they need to clean off the blade, but you never know.

Seriously boomer. Nobody is going to take your word for it. You need to provide pics. You are new here and in a forum with spyderco fans. I have had a few DLC spydies and let me tell you.....it's tough stuff. I'd bet on your blade being a fake. Who knows though. Provide some pics and prove us wrong.

I recently had a black Southard show up with a bubble in the coating. The second I touched it, the bubble was gone and I had a perfect circle of exposed blade. I emailed spyderco and they took care of me. Sure I had to send the blade back but it was worth it. 2 weeks later I got a different brand new blade.

Here is my 2012 review of the Manix 2 and the only DLC that I have been able to remove was when my hand slipped on my diamond stones.

Either, as others have noted, what you're seeing is cardboard particle rubbed off on the DLC coating or else, as yet others have suggested, your knife is a fake. My experience with it is limited, but does confirm that DLC, while very difficult to scratch off, tends to mark up quite easily when cutting some materials. The good news being that those marks come off pretty easily too.

Still curious to see pictures of this particular blade...
I can completely see what Bella was explaining being the case. It will definitely show trace of the scraped area, but not be removed.
Similar to owning a black car, that paint will show any imperfection more so than a lighter colored paint. Doesn't necessarily mean it's damaged though.

I've had quite a bit of experience now with DLC coatings on KMC cycling chains, and they hold up GREAT, and see a lot more abrasion/friction and tension abuse than any cardboard could dish out. Also coatings on suspension parts like Kashima and TiNi, all of which have evolutionized the industry...
I have seen some of those chipped and scraped, but from sliding down rocks... not cardboard.

I wouldn't hold my breath, they haven't been online in a while. My guess is that they joined the forum to ask this question, they got their answer, and realized it was just gunk left on the blade.
