i know this is an old design, but i have a few questions about it. when was it discontinued and was it for lack of sales? why is the cutout for the blade hole only on one side? why was the clip placed where it was? it looks almost like an afterthought.
was the forward choil introduced on this and the renegade?

i just got one today from another BF member and i couldn't help but compare it ito my native and calypso jr. it's neat to see evolution in their designs. the forward choils on the newer ones are bigger, and they have something to keep your thumb from going forward. (notches on the native, ramp on the calpyso jr. the newer designs are also more size efficient, lower handle to blade ratio. bigger blade holes on the new ones too. all improvements on the concepts. thanks for making great products today and better ones tomorrow!

I can never remember, is the Blackhawk the big one, or is that the Renegade? I like the blade shape, but I agree with your comments on the handle. Has anyone modified one of these? Maybe a new military clip could be retrofitted....

Blackhawk is the smaller version. I tried to find the Renegade for awhile, but they seem to have disappeared. I have a Blackhawk and I think the concept works better in the Renegade size, I've handled one in a shop, but don't own one.

Hey Brian,

If you still are looking for a Renegade, we might be able to work something out. Send me an e-mail if you are interested.

The Blackhawk was discontinued some years ago. Probably at that time, the idea of ambidexterity consideration was not a realized priority. Ergo, the cutout being on only one side. Take a close look at the Native and the Blackhawks handle. See something?

One thing though, I truly wish any number of the future models now in design and testing would use the same BROAD clip point/ bowie blade design as the Blackhawks. The JD Smith is a halfhearted attempt at best IMO.

Ok, Dennis, it's about time I swing by your place again. Will you be there this weekend?

Leroy - the cut-out on the one side for the opening hole was intentional, even if it did prove to be a mistake (mine). When we put the cut-out on both sides, the knife balanced differently in the hand and the middle finger position was not as comfortable. As it turned out, this proved to be a terminal flaw because most ELUs unconciously perceived the knife to be a linerlock and tried to unlock the knife through the recessed scale.

The clip WAS just stuck on. we were not yet making dedicated clips.

The Blackhawk (smaller than the renegade) was one of the early half/half choils.

We still have parts for Renegades and some blackhawks. With some mods, we're thinking of making a final run.

No, NO, Sal. You don't want to do that. I'd have to buy yet another knife, and I'm almost caught up for this year!

Ewok - Not sure on the mods. One will be to cut-out the back aide scale to match the front.

Probably will not be an SFO exclusive.

OD - "When you still have knives to buy, that's how you know you're not dead".

Oh, now ya done gone and gotten me scared. Although, technically, I'm have at least 17 months to know that I'm not dead (Talonite Talisman on order).

Maybe we should make knife blades out of staples!

Ewok - depends on the number of blades we have. Not sure at this time.

OD - Good to know you'll be around for a while. Need somebody to keep giving me &$#@.

wow, i didn't expect this much response!! thanks to all though. sal, thanks for your replys, i wanted to understand the knife a little better. i'll be looking forward to the modified knives. how soon can we expect them? and please announce them here on bladeforums!! would you consider doing them in any G-10 other than black? i've heard of tan G-10...

Hey Sal,

I already beat you to the modifications of the Renegade. I reshaped the right side handle and mine now look and feel great. You can really get a firm grip on the knife now. And it looks like it came that way. The only thing I don't like is the clip (which you said wasn't knife specific).
