Spyderco Byrd Cara Cara

Gunmike1 let me sharpen his G-10 Cara Cara and I felt like a complete schmoe for owning knives which cost much more, but weren't that much better (ZDP-189 Delica with highly thinned out blade being the exception).

I don't know where this 'China' place is, but folks who make Byrds for Spyderco over there sure do an awesome job.

Thom did a great job on my Cara Cara for me when I chopped my fingers in two and couldn't reprofile myself. His point is very well founded, the G-10 Cara Cara is just an incredible value, and outperforms a lot of knives double it's price. It is a very solid knife with a real good lock up and solid feel, and the steel takes a really nice edge, and holds it pretty decently, too. Hard to beat it for under $25.

I think 8cr13mov is the equal of aus-8 steel

It is compared to it, but wjen directly compared to the AUS 8 in my CRKT's it is much less prone to burring when sharpening and seems to hold the edge a little bit longer. This could be due to the reported hardnesses favoring the Byrd steel compared to where CRKT takes their AUS-8. Cliff Stamp has mentioned that Benchmade takes their AUS 8 to 60 RC, that would be a good comparison to the Byrd steel, which is reported at 61 RC. I think the CRKT's are in the 57 or so range, not positive on that. Then again, some S30V blades that were supposed to be 59-60 RC got tested at 55 RC, so you never really know what the actual harnesses are unless you test them.
