Went down to Spyderco the other weekend with a few bucks to burn. "Um, you guys wouldn't happen to have any factory seconds, mainly in the Endura or Delica line?" <response> "Heheheh..................no."
I ended up purchasing a Byrd 'Raven' model. http://spyderco.com/catalog/details.php?product=196
I was suprised when first handed this knife at the reassuring heft and solid construction. Great fit for my medium sized hands - VERY comfortable in either regular or reverse grip. The knife is all black, which is another attractive feature for me, and the blade has partial serrations and was a hair-shaving factory sharp. The knife is a smidge thicker than what I'm used to EDCing, but wasn't uncomfortable when placed in my back pocket on the 15min drive back home. I had some light yardwork to attend to and ended up using my Raven for various things such as cutting twine, opening plastic soil bags, cutting small branches, cutting an old hose up, etc... The knife did what it was supposed to do - cut, and pierce, and cut, with no marring of the black coating. Drawing and opening (and disengaging/closing) the knife felt very natural and smooth, especially with thick gardening gloves (the byrd's 'eye' is great for use with gloved hands). Did I mention that this thing fit my hand nicely? The scales have an odd 'feather' cut to them, but as advertised does the job of adding some grippage. Another thing I couldn't get over is how much bigger this knife looks when opened. Must be the blade shape, but when opened, it appears to be much larger than it is, and more intimidating (which is why I ordered the Byrd 'Crow' model - smaller version of the Raven, and one I can use around the office). Uh...this is a Chinese knife? Really. Well, Chinese or not, this is a great knife for a little amount of money. BTW, I am in no way affiliated with Spyderco.
