Spyderco Byrd Series

I don't like the stainless handles versions, and I've never seen an aluminum handled Byrd; still, the FRN and G10 models are exceptional. I'm glad to hear they run them hard. I'm curious lately about CRKT. Has anyone ever tested any kind of sample of their blades?

I've been very happy with my Spyderco Native, but I like the larger blade of the Cara Cara. Very comfortably to use, too.

I used a raven hard for almost six months commercial fishing (lobster, lots of rope cutting) and it held up great. Excellent bang for the buck.

yeah Pete1977, the factory hollowground edge on my Raven black PE was impressively *keen*... these titanium carbonitiride coated blades resist abrasion quite well, after slicing lots of cardboard my Raven's black finish still appears new, esp. after a little mineral oil rubdown

Confederate,
I love CRKT designs. I don't like their steel at all. Either dulls if you look at it, or occasionally brittle to point of breaking. My last good CRKT was a mid-sized Apache with ATS-34. It's really ashame they're producing nice looking designs in .. what... AUS 4?
Contrast to the Byrd line, an economical nicely finished knife that, for me anyways, holds a nice edge and is fun to use. I have a Cara too, HAS a Meadowlark, gotta go get another one.

I'll agree with folks that say its a good bang for the buck. My G10 Cara Cara and Robin are a tad heavy but solid. Ergonomics are great. These are cool knives for giving away (not that i don't like keeping them) and you won't feel sick if you lose it (not that i want to lose it). :D

I, like a lot of the others have mentioned that it's a good knife for the $. I have a Cara Cara with G10 handles and really like it, takes a beating and holds up well.

Personally, I'm not a big fan of the hole on spydies, but i think the teardrop shape on the byrd line looks great, and may cause me to delve into the spyderco line.

I have a Byrd Crossbill and was amazed at the quality I got for the money I spent...I would recommend the Byrd line anytime.

+1

Though I did see better performance when I reprofiled the edge down to about 15 degrees per side. Made me realize how hard the steel was too, took forever.

I just LOST my FRN Meadowlark  Great knife, replaced my Delica, better ergos, solid, sharp, guess I better start looking for its replacement. Damm!
Ah, most knives pop up eventually. Besides, the Meadowlark isn't an expensive knife. Try a Cara Cara next if you don't already have one.

BTW, what is everyones' preference for Byrd handles, FRN, G10, stainless or aluminum?

I like the FRN just fine, but I have to say I think those little vents on the topstrap of my Cara Cara are cool cool.

The Byrds I've seen looked good esp. for the money. BUT if you haven't checked out the latest Delica and Endura, you should, you might decide to hold out for the Spyders, can't beat the real thing:cool:

The Byrds are nothing to sneeze at. Not quite Spyders but they're still amazing knives... and an excellent gateway drug for a newbie knife owner.

The G-10 Cara Cara at about $20 was the best money I've ever spent on a knife. The value is ridiculously high for this knife. I don't suspect the prices will stay that low for long.

Just received my first Byrd today, a G-10 Robin. I really like the looks of the Dragonfly but as a lefty I had to opt for the Robin as an office knife. I'm pretty impressed. Outstanding fit and finish. It came pretty darn sharp and locks up with a loud click. No blade play. Heck of a knife for $20. Time will tell but it looks like a winner.

Frank

P.S. blade centered when closed

P.P.S. the spring on the lock bar is way too stiff, it's actually painful to push it down, think I'm going to send it back

Well, my 2 Crows arrived in the mail this morning - I got a bargain price on the knives, but the postage came to $24!

First impressions: Nice looking knife. I was unsure about the aluminium handle, but it actually feels pretty good. I ordered both Crows with the combi-edge, they're perhaps not quite as sharp as my Spydies, but sharp nonetheless. The black finish on the blade seems OK, perhaps not as good as on the only other 2 knives I own with coated blades (a Buck Titanium and a Gerber Patriot), but they were much dearer knives. I don't like liner locks, and this is no exception I'm afraid. Knife opens easily enough. The pocket-clip is currently way too tight for me, but it's early days :) It's currently fixed for tip-up carry, but I'll probably change that. All in all, for the price, I'm impressed.
