Spyderco Caly 3 riveted handle. Have you had any trouble with it?

Most folders are put together with screws, and that makes it easy for the user to take it apart if needed.

Since the caly 3 is riveted except for the pivot, taking it apart is not an option.

Have this caused any trouble for those of you who own a caly 3, or any other riveted spyderco? Do the rivets come loose over time?

Spyderco make good knives so I doubt the will be any trouble. I'm just not used to rivets on modern folders.

I have had no prob with the Caly 3 or 3.5 rivets, nor those of the Manix 2 lightweight or Centofante III. I understand how folks can have sort of a visceral bad reaction to the idea of a rivet, but I have found them to work well and not loosen up over time. I don't field dress game or dig in the mud with these knives, so I've never felt the need to take them apart. That could be an issue for some, but you can still clean them with hot soapy water, compressed air, etc. No worries!

I have many riveted knives made by spyderco. Never had a problem. Action has always been good with no need for anything other than lubrication. I prefer rivets for lockbacks.

I have had screwed together spydercos that needed tightening, especially the pivot, and one that lost a screw pretty quickly.

I have a caly 3 cf and its tight. I guess if you had the time and tools you could replace the rivets with pins and screws.

My FRN riveted spydercos have been zero drama workhorses with no play developing after over a decade of use. You can't take them apart, but you should never need to either. Hot water and dish soap on a toothbrush works exceptionally well to clean folders, you can use pretty much anything really. If you use water based cleaners just make sure you rinse well and let them dry properly (or hose them down with WD40, I prefer to just blow them out with compressed air or dry with a hairdryer and apply fresh lubricant) As a simple rule of thumb if you can stand putting it on your hands G10 will not be bothered by it.

False. The vast majority of folding knives are pinned construction. Victorinox alone produces around 70,000 knives each day, all of them pinned together.

And no, I've never had a problem with my pinned Spydies that was related to the pinned construction.

No problems here, been carrying knives for 20+ years. Pinned knives have been around for literally centuries.

No problems for me. I enjoy taking knives apart but it is only very rarely actually necessary.

Caly is a great model. I've got a few and they have never let me down and still operate as new.
Disassembly for cleaning is as simple as the design: Open blade, Remove pivot pin screw, Depress lock bar, Pull out pivot and the blade falls out. Voila, that's as far as it breaks down. No washers, nothing falls out, etc. Reassembly, just reverse the process.

The only problem I have with my Caly's is putting them down.

Amen
I have the original caly 3 and the new super blue. I consider them lighter duty knives but i've not had a problem with either one. This model is in my top 5 favourite knives of all time.

No washers? Does it just glide on the liners?

No, pinned construction is strong enough for any folder. It would take a lot of force to shear them.

I love my Carbon fiber and super blue Caly 3's! The pivot requires a hex screw though, instead of Torx.

Like other posts, no problem with the Caly 3 or any other riveted Spydercos over
here. I was initially concerned with it as well and wondered if not being able to
take the knife apart would frustrate me as I tend to want to see how things are
put together, but in truth it keeps things simple. Just use it, clean blade, lube
and repeat. Plenty of other knifes out there to take apart.

My VG10 bladed Caly 3 is also smooth as glass to open.

Pins are not a negative for me. Love the Caly series, especially the 3.5.

Just wanted to throw in a photo of my two favorite Calys.
Caly 3 Super Blue Sprint in the back and Caly 3.5 carbon fiber VG-10 in front. I picked up the carbon fiber ZDP-189 but sharpening that blade wore me out and the laminate on the blade is easily scratched up. That's ok for a beater but not with a blade of that value so swapped blades with my G10 VG10.
Put on a scale the carbon 3.5 weighs .001 less than the G10 Caly 3. I was happy with the result.
And just a side note, the Caly 3 & 3.5 blades aren't interchangeable. Just for kicks I gave it a try.

I have a couple of caly 3s (cf and sb) and they are among my most used knives. Never a problem. And they get used for everything.
