Tried to run a search on google and came up emplty. I wanted to know if the spyderco caly 3 is suppose to have any washers at the pivot point? If so, are the washers suppose to be phosphor bronze washers or just regular stainless steel ones? Thanks for any help.

Far as I know, all Spydercos with metal liners have washers and the washers are either phosphor bronze, or some variety of plastic, such as nylatron. Not sure which of those the Caly 3 uses, never had the urge to take mine apart to find out. But I suspect it's the bronze ones since they seem to be the current rage.

Hi SharpOne,

There are no pivot washers in the Caly3. The tang and liners are polished. It is a level of quality very difficult to achieve in todays knife manufacturing world.

Interesting. Which other Spydercos are are washerless?

I know for a fact (I voided the warranty, but managed to put it back together just fine) the Ocelot is also washerless. I believe that most of the older (and newer models like the Salt series), all FRN-handled models lacked stand alone washers, but had integral, FRN washers, machined into the FRN scales.

No washers. Just polished steel on polished steel. The smoothness without washes makes the knife even more impressive. The Caly3 really is a special knife.

Hi Stabman,

Offhand, Persians, Kris, Ocelot, Caly3's. Most early Clipits.

As I think of more, I'll add models. All Lockbacks.

It's more difficult (labor intensive), but honestly, most customers would rather have PB washers. Both work well, washers do make the knife a bit thicker.

Some of our new higher line designs have in my opinion, set a nice "standard" in performance, fit & finish on high quality production knives.

(Models like the Caly3, Stretch2, P'kal, Dodo, Street Beat, Persians, Kris, E4 / D4 in G-10, Kopa's, Kiwis).

IMO, well thought out designs, very well made out of very high quality materials. We can't sell a bunch of them, but we can't make a bunch of them.

What about the Adventura? I have to disassemble it to clean it properly, didn't do it before yet and wonder whether there are washers or not.
Shall I apply some lube or isn't it nessecary or even harming?

Unless you dropped it in a bucket of varnish and allowed it to dry, it is unlikely you have to ever disassemble your knife to clean it.

A motor car is a far more complicated piece of machinery, and I've yet to see someone disassemble one at a car wash, priior to cleaning. :D ;)

Well, the knife is full of very fine sand I can never get out without disassembling.

Thanks for the reply.
The Kris looks really neat: it's my next planned aquisition(along with a Manix 83mm).

I think I'll give up on the idea of disassemblich my Adventura, since Sal said in another Thread better not to do it with a Caly 3 and there are not that many differences.
Cleaned it with a toothpick and toilet paper for like 1 hour and it seems to be clean of dust and sand...

Somewhat related, I took my Cara Cara apart upon purchase & mirror polished the liners (front section only), tang area of the blade, pivot, & washers (which was tricky), and the improvement was just crazy. It all but eliminates blade play by allowing a tighter pivot without hampering smooth opening/closing due to all contact points being sick slick. I also dab a touch of Tetralube on all contacts.

You can hold the washers on a flat surface and lightly go over them with a dremel soft felt & green compound, & remove any and all rough sections, including the slightly turned edge on most pb washers. Just go slow & be careful as a dremel will eat one in 1/2 a heartbeat.
