Hi guys, I imagine this has been discussed before, but for some reason the search isn't working (please don't tell me to do a search, I already know how to do that) but does anyone have anything to say about the Spyderco Captain? I came across it while searching around randomly.

Interesting design, I wonder if it's worth getting. Never seen or heard anything about it before. There was a post on the Spyderco forum with a pic here:

It doesn't show up on the Spyderco site in the catalog. What is this thing?

If you're like me and it comes to Spydercos, the "look" of the knife just has to grab you. If you like the look, the knife is well made and solid, and lock up is solid and it passes all the usual test. * make note this is a liner lock. I don't have issues with them in general, but some of us do. (that's cool) This knife takes a lot of pocket space. I think it would be very useful in the house remodeling lines of work, i.e. as a scraper, triming floor coverings, etc.... I like mine, but will it get pocket time ?????

I kind of wonder about a model that I've never heard of. I would think that I would have heard something if it really kicked ass. When people like a knife it's hard to get them to shut up about it (myself especially). About the Captain....nothing. Does this mean people don't like it? Or does it mean it hasn't caught on yet?

Is the captain a limited production item? I'm intrigued. I don't think Spyderco makes knives that don't kick ass. I've never met one I didn't like, anyway. Maybe I should do another search. :p

I don't know about the limited run. There is a thread going on about this knife right here. (Spyderco forum) Full of great pics and a very good review from Scott.

Give it a LITTLE time  The Collector Club pieces went out about three weeks ago. They have been fetching STUPID money on EBay. Especially considering they are production knives, not a sprint run. I'll get one when the new wears off enough to get the price down to where I don't get a nosebleed from the altitude and the dealers have them in stock. Until then, I'll reserve judgment.

I don't think this will ever reach the popularity of something like the Delica. The Captain's blade shape will attract people with unique needs in their knives...but its weirdness will keep it from the mass appeal that the para or manix might enjoy. This says nothing about the quality or design of the knife, really, only that it's more specific...take the dodo for example, a cult classic for those who have that specific need in their knife (me), but it certainly doesn't have the broad appeal of an endura. The captain's a very cool knife, and only the price keeps me away.

I just received mine on Monday (regular run--not a collector knife).

This is the first knife that I've bought that I've felt was worth every penny that I paid for it. It is solid, well made, and the fit and finish are perfect.

Although it is wider than an endura/delica when closed, it isn't any wider than a mini manix or chinook (not as fat either.)

It's also smaller than it looks in the pictures I've seen.

Overall, I really like it (so much so that I will not miss the mini manix that I sold to buy the captain.) Well worth the $112 that I paid for it.

Thanks guys. I was thinking about this last night and it occurred to me that it might be an upcoming model, rather than something that has been out for a while.

I really like the looks of this knife. From the pics it looks "tank-like", which is my cup of tea. Size is about right, too. I live in a relatively knife-unfriendly city and find myself carrying smaller blades lately just in case I get hassled by the fuzz (not very likely but possible).

So I guess my question is: Is this knife going to be a full production model? If so, when? I'd like to pick one up but I'm not going to pay more than MSRP (okay, less that MSRP). If I can find one of these for around $115 I'll pick one up. I've seen a couple in online stores for that, but of course they are not in stock.

Like I said--I just got mine, and it's a 'regular' production model. I paid ~$112 plus shipping. I ordered it from savsonswordsandknives.com, who was the only one that had it in stock as of last week. I think most dealers have them in stock now, and I know that knifecenter.com has them in.

Yeah, I saw your post right after I posted mine. I think we were typing at the same time and you beat me to the punch.

I did a little more research in the Spyderco.com forum and found quite a bit about this sweet little knife. It shows up in the 2006 catalog supplement. I've decided to pick one up and give it a shot. As soon as I can get my hands on one.

Do you like yours, Eric?

I really love it--the blade shape may turn some off, but it's a great knife. Very solid and well built.

Yes that knife is a TANK. And the blade design is very useful. I find the "tip" edge gets a lot of use on mine.
