Spyderco Civilian

To answer the orginal question,
The tip is not at all resistant to breaking. It is designed with one thing in mind and that is to be used as a defensive knife. If you ever have to use a knife in a self defense situation, you REALLY need it! No one in their right mind would consider a knife, much less a small folding knife a primary defensive weapon. It is what you use when you have nothing else.

For that reason, the Civilian is not meant to be used as an EDC. It is not meant to do many tasks well. It is meant to do task as well as it can. If the tip breaks while you are defending your life, it still has plenty of edge and point left to continue the fight. The fact that the knife is ruined should be the LEAST of your concerns if you have to defend your life with a folding knife.

If you have to defend your life more than once with a folding in your lifetime, you need to seriously consider what you are doing wrong in your life. Either you need to avoid dangerous situations or you need to go around much more prepared.

Cold Steel makes a knife called the Black Talon. It is a civillian type knife with the san mai steel so tip should be much stronger, blade is quite thick and it is a liner lock. Costs more and sturdier. They do pay some sort of royalties to Spyderco for the design use. The Black Talon does lend itself to a ghetto wave. Now I will probably get blasted for mentioning this is a Spyderco section.

i would very much prefer the civvy to the talon FWIW, i dont like cold steal and imho the talon is priced a little high for what it is.

The civilian is a great knife if you use it for what it was designed. Last ditch self defense as a slashing weapon. It is clearly not an offensive weapon because it is almost impossible to stab anyone with it. It works but you should vieuw it as a specialised tool that has no other function then SD. I would suggest you should also look into a Matriarch if you can find one. Smaller , lightweight FRN with the same blade shape. I have one with a custom neck sheath and it carries effortless and is very unobtrusive.

+1 for the Matriarch!!!!
