spyderco clip problems

has anyone elses clips on police g10 or endura broken or hyperextended? I was walking in my church and caught in on the radiator and it snapped off. I dont like the standard clips, prefer the wire ones.

Yep, happened with a Delica once and my seatbelt. I prefer the hourglass clips to the wire ones all day, they have the worse retention of any clips ever. Knives will literally jump right out of your pocket with the most minimal effort. Plus they flex sideways which is another undesirable characteristic when you want to keep a knife secure and in your pocket. Such is life, have to be more cognizant of things in your immediate area. I see knives with clips on them that look like they have been tried to the bumper of a truck and dragged on the highway for days.

A guy in one of my classes carries a Gerber Mini Paraframe clipped to the outside of his pocket every day. How he doesn't lose that thing is beyond me.

I've bent clips on knives, flasights, pens, and sharpies. Even broke one clean off a benchmade before. It just comes with the territory when you've got a clip on your pocket. Certainly not limited to spydercos clips.

Clip design is a delicate balancing act. The less the end of the clip bends out at the bottom, the harder it is to easily return to a pocket. The more its bent out, the more likely it is to snag on objects. I think the classic spyderco hourglass clip is one of the best designs I've tried, just behind benchmade's split arrow clip in my opinion.

I've also been known to stumble over my shoes when waking up stairs, so your overall level of grace comes into play too... :-)

I have snagged my delica4 on the corner of the metal workbenches at work. Had to remove it, and bend it back.
Bent the clip on my hest 2.0 bad once. Came out about an inch from the titanium side. Only ones I have never had them catch on anything was my old kershaw blur.

I broke off two FRN integrated clips on Enduras in the early 90s. Haven't bought a FRN since. I should get a Pacific Salt some time.

spyderco said it was $6 to replace it then i told them you dont stand behind your product? they said they would give it to me for free, which I think is right. I was not abusing the knife in any way. I like spyderco wish they had a better warranty thou

Can't blame Spyderco for making a change to address a problem. Look up Benchmade clips on ze'bay. People get them for free and sell them for profit. Granted, free parts are nice considering what some of these knives cost but, Spyderco is a comparitively small company and likely can't foot the bill for those that would abuse the system. Glad they took care of you at any rate.

On topic, I have snagged and bent a couple of my Spyderco clips over the years, all bent back easily. I imagine subsequent bendings would likely result in a break though. I'm with the crowd here on the hourglass clip, one of my favorite designs functionally and aesthetically speaking.

I've seen some carbon fiber clips that seem to be rounded in the areas that are prone to snagging. I cannot remember who makes them. Has anybody tried one of those. They look pretty good.

So if you're driving and you side swipe a mailbox that takes your side mirror completely off, you expect the manufacturer to send you one for free?

So you think it's right that the costs to replace clips for the people that broke them should be distributed to all of spyderco's customers? Interesting stance, for a knife forumee.

Yep, clips can snag on things if you're careless and that often results in the clip, the pocket, the item upon which the clip snagged, or more than one of those things, being damaged. Given the universality of clumsiness, I'm fairly confident that someone has broken the clip on every Spyderco model that's been out for more than a couple months. Same, I'm sure, would go for darn near every other clip equipped knife, as well as pens and mechanical pencils. I know that Spyderco often goes "above and beyond" to help customers, but I'm still a bit surprised that they'd cave in to the OP's ridiculous demand.

It's a thin piece of steel that you yanked on with most of your body weight because you almost walked into a radiator... You say oops, buy a replacement, and try to be more careful. Nobodies fault but your own.

Rightly so, there is no free lunch anywhere really. If the clip had broken all by itself while sitting there undisturbed, they may have given you a clip, but since your actions caused the breakage. Abuse has nothing to do with it. Spyderco's warranty is fine, but one has to remember that being reasonable goes a long way in and of itself.

Every single spydie clip I own (barring my endura) bends out pretty badly. Even my ZT, nothing to do but just bend it back with some vice grips.
Other than that, they perform well in a factory environment full of edges that could snag on an ordinary straight clip.

my clip got caught a few times but so far are still in good shape. I too dun see why spyderco or any other makers should warrant the clip if i really bend it as when things are free, will only make people abuse it.

of the best bands i know of is surefire, they have really great warranty services even thou its the customers fault but one have to pay a lot more for their flashlight too. still love them thou.

No bends in my arsenal of spydies. Leatherman on the other hand makes a terrible clip. I have broken 2 just with my seatbelt.

The reason Spyderco charges customers to replace a pocket clip that THEY accidentally bent is because replacement clips aren't factored into the price of their knives. It's as simple as that.;)
