Spyderco Collaborations from Taichung

Like just about everyone else with a Spyderco from Taiwan I'm very satisfied.

I can't understand how some people can dislike the Taiwan made Spydercos when they see the quality.

I'm really new to spyderco, having just purchased my first (2 mt17's) and I have been lusting for a couple of folders for a while (mostly a ffg endura, a manix2 xl, and the tenacious) I've handled the manix and the tenacious, and they seemed like very well built knives, but I've learned that you can't just call something junk because of where it came from. I do plan on owning all three of these knives at some point.

This rambling leads to my question. Is spyderco an american owned and operated company that just outsources manufacturing on some models, or are they part of an international company that has a factory in the USA? (Like Kershaw /kai, if I'm not mistaken). I almost feel better giving my money to a company that's american at the top, vs a company from another country that's operating a factory here, if that makes any sense.

Some light reading. Should answer most of your question. http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/805037-Overseas-manufacturing?highlight=Taiwan

It has to do with that country having made junk knives in the persons lifetime, folks don't know that at one time Germany made cheap knives for the world, and Japan, and Providence RI was the center for cheap knives, it will not be long before China will be too expensive for the cheap work and they will be made North Korea or some other developing country and the cycle goes on. The fact that Taiwan made Kyber knives for Cole National and even worse knives for other importers is of recent memory and therefore leads to what you see. Japan began to make World class knives in the 1980s so their cheap knives are forgotten by most collectors. In 20 years those people's children will hate some other country.

I am vocal about buying made in USA.
However there is no denying that the Taiwan Spydercos are some of the best production folders on the market.
As much as I wish they were made here I think this is a best case scenario and what's most important
Is not buying a product made in a "non friendly" country.
The China Spydercos are great knives but it will be a cold day in hell before I buy one.

Sal I think you do a great job keep it up

A.G. chimed in - that's awesome. His answer is basically what I believe about the whole thing, because A.G. Russell knows more about knives than I ever will, and A.G.'s catalog is where I got my favorite Spyderco ever - the SS Mini Jess Horn. I have a feeling that Dalian, China will be coming on the map soon, and the gripes of Taiwan will dissipate.
