“Integrity is being good even if no one is watching”….

We wanted to make everyone aware we are implementing a change for 2016 that you should hear directly from us. Spyderco will be implementing a Minimum Advertised Pricing (MAP) Policy with our retailers that will go into effect January 1, 2016. This means that there can be no advertisements on-line or in print at a price lower than 40% off of MSRP. We are also not raising prices on nearly all of our product line. Our policy is slightly unconventional and is designed with everyone in mind.

We are consumers too, we understand buying products based on important factors like product quality, price, business reputation, customer service, and other factors, and we understand the value of finding that great deal and knowing that you are purchasing a great product from a reliable source. We also understand that over the last 40 years, we have cultivated unique partnerships to include consumers, retailers, wholesalers, and suppliers that have all contributed to our success in one way or another.

Our number one priority is to continue to bring you Reliable High-Performance products. We plan to continue growing our innovative product line, finding creative ways to fight counterfeit products in the marketplace and continue strengthening our relationships with those who are committed to the same goals.

Many of us have our favorite store or website that we purchase from for many different reasons with price being only one of those factors. This does not mean that on January 1st, all of our products will suddenly be extremely more expensive, instead what it means is that Spyderco is working with everyone in our network to continue bringing our products to you at fair prices through your favorite retailers.
This is a work in progress and we will continually review and apply our CQI – Constant Quality Improvement philosophy in the coming months. The Spyderco Crew thanks you for your undeniable loyalty and continued support!

Thanks for the heads up and I reasonably expect prices to go up over time. The manix 2 I bought for around $85 in s30v and g10 was an absolute steal.

This impact doesn't seem to strike me as a massive impact. It's more generous percent wise than others along with the mostly no increase in msrp and we get to see it coming

We will see how it goes

Seems a lot of industries are going this direction. Not a surprise.
I just look forward to all of the new innovative knives Spyderco will bring to us in the future.

As much as 40% seems much more reasonable than what other companies have done.

Well, I appreciate the heads up and reasons for what you're doing, but if you want honest consumer feedback it will definitely result in me buying fewer Spyderco knives after the policy goes into effect. :(

Isn't 40 percent off MSRP pretty much already in practice at the more aggressive online dealers? Does this really change anything?

I got out a calculator and was checking this earlier, and you're pretty much right. Using KW as the vendor of choice, switching to 40% off MSRP was for the ~10 models I checked pretty much always less than a 10% bump. Golden, Taichung, Japan, and China models.

Might make a bigger difference for a few of the real cutthroat deals on the big river, but it's not going to be a huge increase from most dealers, I think.

I'm just curious, if you're currently getting more than 40% off msrp, where is it that you're buying?

Depends on the model and, sometimes it seems, the day. I shop around a fair amount before I buy. It isn't gonna be a huge price increase by any means, but I have some issues with MAP policies. I've pretty much completely avoided Benchmade and ZT since they began to enforce their policies much more rigorously. I appreciate the support such policies offer dealers, both online and brick and mortar, but I try very hard to get the maximum value for my money. That means even a modest increase can easily make me look to other options. I suspect Spyders will still sneak their way into my collection, but the rate will most certainly decrease.

Oh Spyderco! I hate to see you, of all companies, do this. What about free market competition? I m disappointed. And I m a big fan.

My most used online shoppe for buying folders has most Spydercos at 45% off the MSRP. So this means price increases. Not big, but increases nonetheless. This is on top of the exchange rate I also have to face as a non-US buyer.
I will most likely get a few Spydercos that I've been wanting for a while before this happens.

When Benchmade did this it stopped me buying them.
Spyderco is doing this to a much lesser extent, so the effect will be less, but it will reduce the number of their products I buy.
I am trying to understand their reasons, I respect the company, but I can't help feeling a bit disappointed by this news.

The only real disadvantage I can see with this is that dealers are going to have trouble selling the less popular models due to not being able to offer them up for a lower price. For example, the Spyderco Worker is still in stock at few dealers for around $135, with a MSRP of $280, at 40% off they can be sold for no cheaper than $168 after January 1st. Considering they are not selling quickly at their current price, seems like they will move even slower with the price bump. This applies to all of the unpopular sprints.

The way I read it is that the advertised price can be no less than 40% off MSRP. I have seen many websites list product in a "add to cart to see price" manner. So hopefully that can be done in "worker" situations when a seller needs to move a product.

Sad to hear Spyderco is going this route. It'll probably result in me buying less of their knives than I normally would.

This is how I see it going also, perhaps with more than just harder-to-sell models, too. Time will tell

For me, this will have a limited effect. I buy most of my knives used off the Exchange, so while prices there may go up in kind, I can still wait for a user to come around and save some money if I need to.

Sad news. As a "foreign" buyer i can't buy in Europe due to the fact that they use MSRP pricing. If they implement MAP on online vendors i fear buying Spyderco's is a thing of the past sadly.

easy there killer, this is pretty close to the prices they have and no where near what other makers have done not to long ago along with not raising msrp. Also they let us know in advance not from their dealers.

Im not thrilled that the prices are higher, but i know i cant expect to pay the same price forever. They do have to go up someday and i just want it to be reasonable

Its not a 40% jump, its pricing at no more than 40% off msrp.

this is far less agressive than benchmade and benchmade really didnt want to tell us much

I see where this can have a more dramatic effect since you are a non Us buyer and well, that sucks

It's disappointing to hear this policy going into place, unless spyderco brings their MSRP into the realm of reality.
