Spyderco cruwear edge retention

I'd guess a burr. Spyderco sharpens using coolant to keep it from heating up too much. People often throw that out as a guess but I have yet to see any evidence of it actually happening.
Yeah I've heard them say that, but all the edge retention tests from outpost76 demonstrated many Spyderco knives taking multiple sharpenings to get through to good steel. The Google Sheets document seems to be down but the videos are still up on YouTube.

How is it proven that it isn't something else? It would take a lot more than sharpening a knife and getting different performance to prove it. I tried watching one of the videos listed and I saw nothing but opinions . No lab work. pictures of the steel before and after sharpening and none of the other things it takes to prove things. You can know what you know and be happily convinced but that doesn't mean the next guy will be .

Well, there is Cedric and Ada. It's bro science, to be sure, but hundreds of knives have seen a boost in edge retention after getting past the factory edge.

I don't have any doubt that overheated edges are a thing, though not nearly as common as what some believe. The tests on that channel are between the edge that is on the knife to begin with and after sharpening on a guided system to a certain grit. I would expect the edge retention to improve from a factory edge. Doesn't mean the edge was overheated.

In my experience, the edge I get from the factory has almost never been as sharp as the edge I put on it later. That's not edge retention just sharpness.

Burnt edges are probably rare. I've never been one to go around sounding the alarm about them, although I'm fairly sure I had one on a pm2 in s110v once. The op appeared to have a grasp of sharpening, which likely ruled out a burr, so I suggested the possibility.

Anyway, I brought up Cedric and Ada because of the dialog above, not really to further a discussion about burnt edges. The op seems to have resolved the issue with his Cruwear.

I didn't say anything about proving?... There's a consistent pattern of behavior where knives get better after a few edges, even at the same edge angle and grit. What causes it isn't conclusive but Larrin Thomas and Roman Landes have both looked into it.
