Spyderco D`allara drop point PE brief review

My D`allara has no play at all...tighten up the torx screw and see if that helps...lateral play is not uncommon on axis locks (because they're not tightened enough) so I don't see why that couldn't be the case here...if, however, you can't get rid of the play by adjusting the screw, then you might have a problem.

Read the reviews and the opening /closing techniques. Found the D'Allara impossible to resist based on the info here. Ordered the D'Allara drop point with the combo blade. Got it yesterday. Opened the box about 6:30 PM. Started making serious plans to leave for the ER about 7PM.
Definitely should NOT have tried any of the detailed closing techniques without becoming more familiar with the lock style and the grip. This is a VERY sharp knife that opens and closes very smoothly. It is little impeded even by finger tips carelessly left in the way.
I do think that, once I'm back in form, this knife will prove to be my favorite Spyderco so far.

Hi Durinsbane,

really sorry 'bout that.

Our knives are really considerably sharper than many out there. We tried warnings, but just got laughed at...."all knives are sharp, etc."

Hope it doesn't deter you.

Yeah, hope you get well soon. Knife tricks are a lot of fun, but I did systematically work me way up from easy to hard stuff. If I had access to a video camera, I wouldn't mind making short clips of basic tricks. No knife juggling, just interesting ways to open good knives.

If you were one hand closing, the tip I like to give is to make sure your bottom three fingers are hugging the clip. If they're on the clip, which is a definite tactile sensation, they're definitely not in the way.

I just discovered a very cool looking trick with the dodo that I'm not sure can be done with almost any other knife.

I just don't know if there'd be enough interest to be worth my time, the videos that is.

I love my D`allara, and I'm a big promoter of it. I have nonetheless considered trading it for another knife. It's fantastic, but I just can't EDC a knife this large and scary looking at a university. At the same time, it would be ideal for certain things where I know the D`allara is tough enough to handle what I throw at it and cheap enough to be replaceable (by my standards). I think I'm going to try and move a few hundred dollars of my collection to make way for new stuff that I will actually EDC.

Sorry to hear that Durinsbane. Oh well, think of it as a love bite:o

In these litigious times I had a look at my one hand closing image and made a couple of improvements.

I suppose I could consider litigation.....but at some point I'm sure that the term "terminal stupidity" would come up in the depositions. Unfortunately I would be unable to disagree. It made very little sense to try one hand opening and closing on that knife that soon after receiving it. Opening....easy. Closing....vigilance concerning all appendages must be maintained.

I'd like to see some shots of the D'Alarra that compare it in thickness to the Para-Military. You know? Spine shots.

Otherwise great review and comments. I've had my eye on this one for a while now. It has to be one of the better deals in the knife world right now.

STR: Just get one!!! Trust me on this!! It is an awesome knife. I am sure that the D'Allara is a lot thicker than the Paramilitary, but I could be wrong. Anyone have spine shots of both? BUT, I can comfortably EDC the D'Allara.

Hi all,

Thx for the excellent info on this knife. I've got a combo edge on the way. Does anyone have the combo blade? I was going to go with something smaller, but I couldn't see the point. I'm intrigued by the lock (looks awesome) and the knife seems to be a real value. I love the VG10. I've got a Benchmade 710HS with M2 and a C83 Persion with VG10, and the Persian is definitely sharper and seems to hold it's blade really well (There are some bald patches on my arm I'm worried will never grow back...) I'll let you know what I think when the D'Allara arrives.

Roger, I've noticed that Spyderco knives seem to come sharper from the factory, however - M2, if properly heat-treated (as Benchmade should be) will hold its edge noticeably longer than VG10.

I got mine last week, and this is one sweet knife. I have a regular D'Allara Rescue with the SE but I really like this one with the drop point and PE. The new one is much easier to close than the older ones. I have a really hard time using the older ball bearing lock, I =think it is my fat fingers, I have actually bene trying to trade my SE one because of this. I like everything about this new one.
