That's a false edge. It's a work of the grinders art and you almost feel like you could cut yourself on it, but you can't. Tried to take a photo but the bloom of the reflection makes the swedge appear thicker than it really is.

It's easiest to see how thin it is right at the transition over my thumb.
EDIT: It'll pierce like the dickens but you won't be back-cutting anything that's not soft.![]()
Actually that is a swedge. A false edge is a sharpened edge that does not run the full length of the blade. Of course, we have misused terms for so long that the original meanings have been practically lost.
