I've been thing of getting myself a Delica 4 FFG knife, maybe the gray, orange or blue model, I can't decide. What's the factory edge angle this knife is ground at, is it 20 degrees?. I'll be sharpening it with a Spyderco Tri-Angle Sharpmaker and have Ultra Fine stones as well.

They advertise 30 degree inclusive but I have never came across one that is remotely close to 15 degrees per side.

I'm not sure the exact but mine sharpens easily on my Sharpmaker. The new Hap40 sprint is out and only about $20 more than the regular production model. I'd say go for that instead

I bought the grey and really like the color. I will get the blue and orange in the near future. You can never buy just one Delica.

Unless you feel the need to reprofile, I've had great luck lately (with several new Spydies) just touching up the apex at the 40 degree setting, with either the medium or fine rods.

I've been siding towards the gray model myself DocT.

I was planning on sharpening it at the 20 side, anything below that would be to thin.

It would be my first knife with VG-10 steel.

I have never even heard of Hap40 before now.

Would I need to worry about the edge chipping if working with wood?.

Not much (if any) experience with HAP40 on the boards, yet....we'll all going to see how well it works.

I love VG10, for its ease of sharpening. It doesn't hold that edge for a long time, in my experience, but it also doesn't chip like some other steels. Working with wood, I really really like Cruwear and CTS-XHP.

We all have our favorites!

How does it hold it's edge vs steel like 154CM, on my Benchmade Mini-griptilian 556?.

Congrats, Dry-cell.

I have no problem using the Sharpmaker to keep them extremely sharp.

I luv my Delicas, especially those in ZDP-189.

But ... my recent accquistion of a Manix2 LW S110V has booted them from my pocket.

So looking forward to the HAP-40 Delica to regain it's EDC throne.

I have both a Delica and an Endura in VG10 and I have always used the 30* settings with the standard rod package and have had very good results.

My Delicas tend to vary slightly.

For consistancy, I guess I should reprofile them to the same angle but I just use a Sharpie pen to mark the edge and then tilt the blade to the match the existing angle.

Spyderco shoots for around 30 degrees inclusive, all my spydercos have been less than 40 degrees, as the delica is a smaller knife, I suspect its probably pretty close to 30 degrees.

fwiw, I just water stone one bevel until I feel, see, the burr then do the other side till I feel the burr and buff it off. I care how my knife cuts more than an even edge.

Have you ever tried a 40 degree micro bevel? It is especially effective on kitchen knives as they continually come in contact with a cutting board. I sharpen at 12-15dps to 8000 grit (Norton waterstone) then a stroke or two at 20dps. The micro bevel is almost imperceptible to the naked eye (at least to these 54 year old eyes). I then maintain on the SharpMaker (flat utlrafine) at 20dps until I can see the micro bevel, now marco bevel, at which I start over again. I find that there is an almost imperceptible difference in cutting performance, but greater edge retention and it takes longer to set up the SharpMaker than it does to re-tune the edge. I find that I only need to 'sharpen' on waterstones once or twice a year at most. That being said. I do rotate through 50-60 kitchen knives I am using and testing at any given time.
